‘Real spirit of bowling’ comes alive in ‘north-south’ tournament

- By KEREM HASAN

A BOWLS tournament based on the “north-south divide” was played at the Olive Press Flat Green Bowling club in Lapta.

The teams did not reflect the Cyprus divide, however, but that of the UK — with bowlers originating from north of Coventry in the green-shirted north team and those below that city in the white-shirted south team.

After some 30 games over four days, the south team emerged as champions, with organiser and co-owner of the club Martin Monks-Appleton telling Cyprus Today: “It was a fantastic turnout of 60 players and there was an even division between the north and south teams which made our lives much easier.

“In the end, the south team deserved to win, with a final score of 18-12. The tournament proved so successful that we are now contemplating making it an annual event and will seek sponsorship for it next year.

“There was good quality bowling from both teams. Of 30 games played, 11 went to the final [“end”], with 10 of them won by the south and one by the north team.

“This first tournament of its kind was very successful and displayed the real spirit of bowling.”
