It was quite a night on the final day of the regular season for Pacific Coast League basketball.

Woodbridge defeated University, 47-43, behind the 17-point performance of Nino Baffo to capture the Pacific Coast League girls basketball title. The two teams were tied for first place with 7-2 records going into the game.

Malia Goldsmith led University with 17 points. University and Irvine are also headed to the CIF playoffs.

On the boys side, Beckman upset Northwood, 62-59, ending the Timberwolves hopes for a PCL title. The Timberwolves finish second to Corona del Mar, which defeated Irvine, 57-36.

Dylan Thoerner scored 16 points and Aaron Lambert 14 points for Beckman (12-15, 4-6). The Patriots have won their last three games. Jacob Huynh scored 20 points to lead Northwood, which held a 49-42 lead after three quarters.

Beckman kept its playoff hopes alive with the victory and moved into a tie for third place with Woodbridge and University. All three teams are 4-6 and will be involved in a mini-tournament Friday to determine who earns third place and a CIF playoff berth.

The coin flip was held after Woodbridge rallied from an 17-point deficit to defeat University, 77-72, at University. Mitchell Rausch scored 23 points to lead the Warriors and Alex Bray had 22 points for Woodbridge.

“We were the odd man out (on the coin flip) and we have the bye,” said Woodbridge Coach John Halagan.

Beckman and University (10-14 overall) will play at 3 p.m. Friday at Woodbridge with the winner moving on to play Woodbridge (14-13) at 7 p.m. at Woodbridge.

Woodbridge came out with the advantage, getting the bye and another home.

“We haven’t played well all year at home,” Halagan said.

Even if Woodbridge were to lose, the Warriors could still petition as an at large team because the Warriors would have a .500 record.

Teams need to have at least a .500 record to advance if they don’t finish in the top three of their league.

Beckman is a team to be reckoned with. The Patriots, under Coach John Goins, beat Woodbridge, 102-66, on Tuesday night.
