LEWIS Burns put the cherry on top of a strong run of competitions for Furness Judo Club, with gold at the North West Open Championships.

Lewis dominated the under-30kgs category – having moved up from under-27kgs due to a lack of entrants – and stood atop the podium at the national ranking event in Blackburn.

Despite the move up in weight class, he was not fazed, throwing his first opponent for Ippon.

His next fight was tougher, but the Furness youngster still won by a couple of yukos.

Due to some competitors withdrawing, this meant Lewis was crowned the overall winner, taking home the gold.

His older brother Harvey fought well in his first fight and looked strong in standing, but was caught with a strangle.

The defeat put him into the reperchage, where he won his next two fights by Ippon with a hold down and an arm-lock, defeating the current British champion in the process.

His next fight was against another national medallist, and it went the distance, with Harvey winning by a couple of Shidos.

This put him into the bronze medal fight against a 17-year-old Great Britain cadet international, which he dominated in standing and was unlucky with a few attacks not scoring.

He went on to lose in an arm-lock, but his fifth place and Ippon wins gave Harvey some valuable ranking points.

Away from the North West Open, Furness members had a strong day at the Craven Open Competition, at Giggleswick School, Settle.

Competitors travelled from Yorkshire, the North West and Scotland to take part, with Lewis Burns, Summer Bentley and Harvey Burns representing the Barrow club.

Lewis was first up, winning three fights, two by Ippon, before having to withdraw with an injured thumb. He came away with bronze.

Bentley showed she is improving with every competition, winning two fights by Ippon in a tough group, and only losing to bigger, more experienced players. She also took a well-deserved bronze medal.

Harvey won his first two fights by Ippon, lost his third by a Shido penalty point, but then went on to win his next 2 by Ippon to claim gold.

There was another medal haul at the Kendal Coloured Belt Competition, a development event for children to gain contest experience.

In the under-12s Minors Group, Tara Allen won all three of her fights by Ippon to land the gold.

Her brother, Evan, also won all his fights to win the family another gold medal.

Bentley showed some great judo skills, losing only one fight out of three for silver, while Lewis Burns won one fight but had to retire injured and settled for bronze.

In the under-15s Pre-Cadets Group, Kavan Burns fought hard against some strong opponents and ended the day with bronze.

In under-18s Cadets Group, Harvey Burns battled well to gold, winning all three fights by Ippon.
