Masters League Finals 2023

Masters 55s TeamNotts 50s, 55s & 60s teams all won their respective League matches during the 2022/23 season. The 50s and 60s both playing in the Midlands divisions while the 55s in the North division. All three teams progressing to play the winners of the three remaining regional winners in the country. The Finals took place at the University of Birmingham over the weekend of 22/23rd April.

All four regional winning teams in their various age groups from over 40s, 45s, 50, 55s, 60s, 65s & 70s initially play in the semi-finals on the Saturday, with the winning team going forward to play in the Finals on the Sunday afternoon. The losing teams play in a play-off for 3rd/4th place on the Sunday morning.

Notts 50s in the semi-finals were up against old rivals West of Scotland who beat them last season in the finals by 8-4. Again, it was a tough match with five rubbers going to three sets; however, the all-round strength of the Notts side pulled them through, winning the match 7-5. Progressing on to play in the Finals against favourites Hampshire on Sunday afternoon.
The team battled hard against Hampshire but were unable to overcome their opponents. Both of Notts men’s pairs beat Hampshire’s 2nd men’s pair and Hampshire conceded their 3rd Mixed, resulting in 9-3 win to Hampshire.
50s overall results. 1st Hampshire, 2nd Nottinghamshire, 3rd West of Scotland, 4th Devon.

Notts 55s were up against Worcestershire, winners of the Midlands division. The Notts side proved to be too strong, winning three Men’s, three Ladies and three Mixed rubbers resulting in a comfortable 9-3 win and they too moved forward to play in the Finals on the Sunday afternoon against favourites Essex.
It was a hard battle for the Notts side against Essex. Notts winning 1 Mens, 1 Ladies and one Mixed rubbers resulting in a 9-3 win to Essex.
55s overall results. 1st Essex, 2nd Nottinghamshire, 3rd Wiltshire, 4th Worcestershire.

Notts 60s unfortunately were without stalwarts Mark Attewell, John Fletcher, Jerry Deacon, Gill Maloney and Wendy Walton-Towel due to injuries and personal reasons.
The team battled hard but could not overcome the strength of their opponents Yorkshire, who gained a convincing 11-1 win over the Notts side. Notts Mixed pair Wendy Bland and Andy Simpson took Notts only rubber.
The team next played Essex in a 3rd/4th play-off on the Sunday morning. Unfortunately, Essex were one man down and therefore conceded three rubbers to Notts. Three of the remaining nine rubbers went to three ends. Only Julian Dumelow and Anthony O’Leary managed to win their three setter, resulting in an 8-4 loss to the Notts side.
60s overall results. 1st Hampshire, 2nd Yorkshire, 3rd Essex, 4th Nottinghamshire.

Notable performances were from Adam and Loraine Buck, unbeaten playing together at 1st Mixed.
Adam with Adrian Mateo winning three out of their four Mens rubbers.
Loraine with Karen Gleave also winning three out of their four Ladies rubbers.

50s Team:

Andy Simpson – Bingham B.C.

To recap on the whole weekend.
A big thank you to all players who supported teams with late substitutions.
A tremendous effort from every player over the weekend resulted in a great county vibe and atmosphere, with players
from all of our teams interacting with each other in a fun and supportive way.
All enjoyed a great social evening. Congratulations to Adrian who turned 60 years over the weekend.
