Club snub could end 110 years of bowls in Dufftown

A century-old Moray sports club is in danger of folding unless new committee members can be recruited.
Dufftown Bowling Club has organised an extraordinary meeting this weekend in an effort to safeguard its future.
At the club’s recent AGM, their four main office bearers all stood down and none of the members attending the meeting came forward to replace them.
Outgoing secretary Helen Ramsay said the club has enjoyed an increasing membership but would not be able to continue without a committee.
Mrs Ramsay stepped down because she is leaving the area, while the president had served for two years as well as doing the match secretary job for five years, and the vice-president left due to ill health.
“At the meeting attended by 23 people no-one was prepared to take over any of the vacant positions,” she said. “Although we understand that everyone has very busy lives and other commitments, without officials to run the business of the club, the club will have to close.”
Dufftown Bowling Club was formed in 1906 and celebrated its 110th birthday last May, holding a gala day in the town.
The club’s membership numbers have slowly increased over the past few years, Mrs Ramsay said, while it has a very good junior section and has started winter short carpet sessions, open to everyone.
“At last year’s AGM it was agreed by the majority of members that we would investigate extending the club house to allow more activities to be carried out.
“Dufftown Bowling Club is a very forward looking club but it needs officials to keep it going.”
The club’s EGM takes place on Sunday (February 12( at 2pm in their clubhouse.
Mrs Ramsay said: “To safeguard the future of the club it is essential that all members attend this meeting.
“Also we would welcome anyone who is not a member who can help us keep the bowling club active.”
