Thankfully, the weather was kinder this week and a full league programme was played in the North Devon Bowls League.

Byeways are hanging on to the top spot in Division 1 but United Services are closing in, and have a game in hand.

Both Great Torrington and Bradworthy had maximum 10-0 away victories in Division 2 and hold the top two promotion places. At the bottom of Division 2, last season's Division 3 champions Bideford A are relegated, as are Victoria Park B in Division 4.

Our club in focus this week is the picturesque United Services Bowling Club in Barnstaple, proudly billed as one of the friendliest bowling clubs in the area, and also a beautiful spot to happily wile away those warm summer afternoons.

At the end of the First World War, the Mill Road sports facilities area in Barnstaple was donated to the returning servicemen.

In 1921, ownership transferred to the council and since then United Service Bowling Club have leased the site and is the only club to retain the United Services title.

They are now known as Barnstaple United Services Bowling club or USBC. Give them a visit to sample bowls in a beautiful setting.
