Through the goodwill of the Palm Lake Resort at Tea Gardens, who kindly provided sponsorship, the event went ahead as planned.

This is the first time the Probus Club has sought sponsorship for the event and possibly the first time a sponsor has had to be sought for any of the numerous Probus bowling events on the circuit.

Organisers were closely watching the weather as the day loomed overcast, cold and windy but nonetheless 72 players took part representing 24 teams from 14 Probus Clubs in the Newcastle area.

Despite the conditions, which deteriorated into occasional rain squalls, 20 ends were competed before the bell when players thankfully left the greens for the comfort of the clubhouse and a very welcome dinner provided by the Queen’s Kitchen.

The overall winners of the day were the Tea Gardens team of Robyn Beaumont and Kayelene and Greg Pearson.

It was an added bonus for sponsors, Palm Lake Resort, in that all three of the winners reside in Palm Lake.

They were presented with the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest Probus Club shield by Jen Nichols, Sales Manager, Palm Lake Resort.

Prizes were also awarded to 2, 1 and zero game winners.

The local Probus Gala Day has been hosted by the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest Probus Club for many years now in August each year.

Most of the clubs in the Newcastle District participate in the Probus bowls circuit which is a great way to promote the Probus ideals of fun and friendship.
