Some St. Mary Catholic Central High School students have found a fun way to spend the cold days of winter.

The school’s Ski & Snowboard Club began in the fall of 2021.

“It was formed by a group of juniors who were looking to have a little fun while waiting for the long Michigan winters to pass,” Jen Foldvary, SMCC college counselor and club moderator, said.

Kaydence Johnson, Presley Riggs and Gracie Gentry, senior members of the St. Mary Catholic Central Ski & Snowboard Club, are shown.

The members don't compete.

“The club is just for fun. Any (SMCC student) can join, even those who have never skied before. The places we go to make it easy for the first-time skiers and snowboarders to learn really quickly,” Foldvary said.

This year, the SMCC Ski & Snowboard Club has 75 members.

“Usually around 25 to 30 students attend the trips. Since we only have one bus, it’s first come, first served,” Foldvary said.

Max Foldvary and Andrew Sottile, freshmen members of the St. Mary Catholic Central Ski & Snowboard Club, are pictured.

They chose resorts close to Monroe.

“We try to plan two to three trips per year, depending on the weather,” Foldvary said. “We usually just stick to ski resorts that are closer to home, like Alpine Valley, Mount Holly, Pine Knob Ski Resort and Mount Brighton. We would love to travel farther north, but the cost of those trips, especially for an overnight trip, is too much to ask for a high school club. We might investigate this option in the future. We have had a very generous donor sponsor the bus for our trips in the past, which costs anywhere from $300 to $500 per trip depending on the distance that we travel.”
