Adaptive bowling league offers active, fun outlet for individuals with special needs

GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Bowlers with developmental disabilities or traumatic brain injuries were among those showing off their skills Wednesday at an adapted bowling summer league event hosted by the Kentwood Parks and Recreation Department.

“We have participants of all ages and all abilities that are featured here today,” said Ann Przybysz, recreation program coordinator of Kentwood Parks and Recreation, about the 11 bowlers that participated in the May 11 session at AMF Eastbrook Lanes, 3500 Lake Eastbrook Blvd. SE.

“This program has been going on for a long time, several years. We’ve been partnering with AMF Eastbrook Lanes and they have welcomed us with open arms.”

Jackie Archie, of Grand Rapids, says she has been coming with her son, Darren Archie, to the adaptive bowling league for more than five years.

“I want to thank Kentwood’s recreation department for offering their adaptive programs to young adults,” she said.

Kentwood has several adaptive recreation programs including pickleball, cycling, dancing, kayaking and golf.

Troy Almli, of Wyoming, who plays in the adaptive golf league, says he likes playing both the sport and meeting people on Wednesdays. He said he has been bowling since age 8.

“Just come on out, hang out, have some fun, talk to people, bowl. You’ll have a blast,” Almli said about anyone who is interested in joining the league.

The adaptive bowling league meets every Wednesday at AMF Eastbrook Lanes from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. Participants can play in either a recreational two-game set or a competitive three-game set at a reduced cost of $8 for two games or $9 for three after fees.

More information about the adaptive recreation programs can be found on their page here.
