A teenage schoolboy collapsed and died at his 18th birthday party after taking a suspected ecstasy pill just one year after his brother died in similar circumstances.

Declan Thomson, a sixth year pupil from Cumbernauld in Scotland, had been struggling to cope with the loss of his older brother Dean.

The 19-year-old's death is also thought to have been caused by the party pill, reports the Daily Record.

Heartbroken mum Linda Ann Thomson, 43, told the Sun: "I still can't believe this has happened to my two babies.

"Dean hasn't even been buried a year and now I'm going to have to put Declan in beside him."

Friends have paid tribute to the popular teenager on Facebook and Twitter.

Declan's high school wrote: "Words cannot express the sadness we feel at the news of the passing of Declan Thomson S6.

"Our thoughts are with his family at this time."

Declan will be laid to rest in the same grave as his brother just weeks after the first anniversary of Dean's death.

He turned 18 on April 1, but told his mother he wasn't interested in a big birthday party - because he was still struggling to cope with the loss of his brother.

Declan later collapsed as he celebrated with friends at a house in Cumbernauld.

After being rushed to intensive care in Monklands Hospital, Airdrie, doctors restarted his heart eight times.

Linda Ann Thomson then made the agonising decision to switch of her son's life support.

Just three days earlier, he had shared a Facebook image of his tragic brother’s football top surrounded with flowers.

Both his mum and Declan's step-dad, Alan, insist the 18-year-old would never have touched an ecstasy pill after the circumstances surrounding his brother's death.

The pair blasted 'trolls' spreading rumours about Declan on social media.

Officers probing the death said a girl aged 17 and two 15-year-old boys have been arrested in connection with alleged drugs offences.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “His death is being treated as unexplained and a post mortem will be carried out.”

The post mortem will be carried out on April 14.
