On Saturday the 4th Team undertook the match against Laughton. With a consistent and well trained team of Nicklin, Stillwell, Iverson, Mewett, Joyce, Vosloo, Watson, Chapman, Buttifant, Isbister and Wellman we turned up as a strong (read Experienced) unit. With the toss won, we elected to bat first and Brian shone with an amazing 103 runs, in 38 over (he really looked forward to opening the bowling), huge shout out for Brian Stillwell, Nicklin gained us a well deserved 28 runs, Watson scored a quick fast 41 which knocked the hosting teams confidence making leeway for Mewett and Buttifant to come on with two overs remaining, they scored a respectable 24 between them NOT OUT (!) I might add. We finished with a solid 238 runs for four and It looked as if a crushing defeat would be inflicted on the home side from then on.
After a light tea, (fortunately back to Sue's teas next week) it was time to field in the light drizzle
Vosloo and Stillwell opened the bowling attack on the home side. Vosloo in his first over tore apart the openers sending one of them back to the pavilion early. The first change for Mayfield bought on Mewett and Joyce who kept the batsmen held in the crease. Sadly the persistent drizzle and short heavier bursts of rain stole the victory from the Mighty 4ths, unfortunately there is just to much metal in the forms of joints holding this experienced side together and with the risk of rust setting we had to declare the game abandoned.
10 points each was not a fair reflection but in reality the only result possible on the day - 5th place in the league with 7 games played.
