Great Britain’s figure skaters are celebrating after recording personal best scores at the 2014 World Figure Skating Championships.

British ice dance champions Penny Coomes and Nick Buckland secured their highest ever World Championship finish - placing ninth in Saitama, Japan.

They scored 153.66 to finish the competition ninth in both the free dance and short dance.

It comes after Penny and Nick won European Championship bronze earlier this year and finished tenth at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Meanwhile, Britain’s Pairs champions Amani Fancy and Christopher Boyadji finished 18th with a score of 46.86 at the event - their first World Championships and only their second senior ISU Championship event together

Amani and Christopher were picked by the National Ice Skating Association (NISA) after their strong showing at international competitions and the result demonstrates the progress being made by the newly-formed Pair under the guidance of coach, Alexander Konig.

Hilary Selby, performance director for the National Ice Skating Association (NISA), said: “We are extremely pleased with the performances of our skaters at the World Figure Skating Championships.

“For Penny and Nick, it tops off a great season and shows the impact of their training with Evgeny Platov, which has seen them improve on their 13th place at the 2013 event. To achieve all they have, despite Nick’s heart surgery in December is truly remarkable and we are really excited about their development.

“Amani and Christopher are in great form and have a huge amount of potential. The 16th place at the European Championships was a great confidence booster going into the Worlds and we are delighted to see them rise to the occasion in Japan.”

GB Winter Olympian Jenna McCorkell made it through to Ladies free skate after placing 20th with a season’s best score of 50.56 in the short program, but was forced to withdraw from the competition following a hamstring injury.

The 2014 World Figure Skating Championships are held at the Saitama Super Arena.
