A new Taekwon-Do school is opening at the Braywick Leisure Centre in Maidenhead.

The new club will start up from Tuesday, November 3 and will be run by Sabum Ben Oxtoby, a fourth Dan Black Belt and Maidenhead resident.

Ben said: “I’m really excited to be opening a school in Maidenhead, where I grew up and where I first started studying Taekwon-Do in 2001 for my Duke of Edinburgh’s award. Taekwon-Do benefits people in so many ways – it’s great for improving your fitness, making new friends, gaining confidence, and of course learning self-defence skills.”

The training sessions in the Korean martial art will take place on Tuesday’s between 7-8pm.

Ben has been running the training school for the past 10 years in Bracknell but is now expanding to train residents in the Maidenhead area.

The classes are free to attend for the rest of 2020 and no advanced booking is required. Visitors can simply show up at the leisure centre and take part. Ben has also worked hard to ensure that the sessions are fully compliant with the Government’s latest guidelines on COVID-19 safety. He is hopeful people will grasp this opportunity to take up a new hobby which has ‘so many health benefits.

“This year has been incredibly hard, physically and mentally,” he said. “I’ve found that Taekwon-Do not only helps keep me physically fit but helps improve my mood and has helped me cope with the stresses of lockdown this year.

“I’d love to help other people find that same sense of wellbeing. That’s why I’m offering free training to anyone who is interested in learning more about Taekwon-Do for the rest of 2020.”

Ben is a fourth Dan Black Belt and trained under Grand Master Wayne Brown, who taught in Maidenhead for 20 years. He is a fully qualified international Taekwon-Do instructor and examiner, as well as a qualified tournament umpire. He has won gold in the British Championships, silver in the English Open and his Bracknell School pupils regularly compete for and win medals in national competitions.
