Twyford, Windsor Great Park, Sunningdale and Windsor & Eton Bowls Club enjoy busy week

Twyford BC

The short drive to neighbours Hurst last Tuesday resulted in defeat on both rinks and a 22-11 loss.

In KL Division E3 Twyford won on all four rinks against Wokingham’s C team with Brian Stain’s team leading the way 33-10. The rinks led by Barry Carter (18-12), Phil Rose (24-12) and Nick Orde (23-15) were also on good form securing Twyford 14 of the points available from the 98-49 victory.

For 70 years Twyford have been playing Wargrave for the Daws Cup, in honour of Reg Daws who played for both clubs. Holders Twyford relinquished their grasp on the trophy last week however, losing by 34 shots (104-70).

Wayne Manley (21-11) and Nick Orde (22-17) led the way as Twyford beat Great Hollands C 60-45 in the KLV. They collected nine points to Great Holland’s single point.

Saturday’s mixed friendly saw Great Hollands claim revenge with a 77-51 win.

Windsor Great Park BC

In a mixed week for Windsor Great Park, Alan Jones progressed to the quarter finals of the two wood champion of champions event after Windsor & Eton bowler Tony Scott conceded on the fifth end.

Paul Short was beaten 21-19 by Maidenhead Town’s Paul Stanley, despite leading for much of the match.

The club’s KLV side picked up eight points from their away win at Windsor & Eton, while the women’s team toppled league leaders Royal Household in the Royal Shield. A cliff-hanger of a rink saw Clare Beahan, Angela Willett and Celia Pitt secure a draw on the final end as the team took six points overall.

Unfortunately the team had little luck against Desborough BC, losing 10-0.

Top rink honours were taken by Ron Ford (skip), John Yates, George Leisten and Gail Dorey as Great Park beat visitors Flitwick from Bedfordshire 110-105.

The men’s triples team were beaten 92-76 by Bracknell, despite an impressive triple led by Paul Short with Peter Simms and Brian Joyner.

Sunningdale BC

Sunningdale BC were beaten at home by Suttons B in the Kennet League, losing 75-68 and taking two points to Suttons’ 12. The best of their rinks was that skipped by George Edwards with Alf Chell, Brian Munden and Ken Johnson.

In the LV Division there was another home defeat for Sunningdale’s A team against Windsor & Eton A (67-52). The best of Sunningdale’s winning rinks was that of Les Green, Ken Johnson and Bob Montgomery (skip).

The A team put in a much improved display to beat Maidenhead Thicket A 65-39, with Les Green, Jen Johnson and Derek Cooper (Skip) taking top rink honours.

The B team completed the double by beating Maidenhead Thicket B 55-44 at home, taking nine points to Thicket’s one. Their highest scoring rink was played by Alf Chell, Adrian Thomas and Keith Steele (skip).

The ladies team won their friendly match against Mytchett 41-23, while in the TVL Sunningdale defeated Bracknell on all of the rinks to pick up 10 points.

Windsor & Eton BC

The week began with two league matches rescheduled due to rain. The KL team played at Maidenhead town, winning on two of the four rinks, but losing overall by 63-81 shots. W&E claim 4 points, with the hosts taking 10. Top rink players, with 22-18, were Tim Marshall, David Freeland, David Bradfield and Richard Heathman.

The KLV ‘B’ team were at Sunningdale where they enjoyed a win over the hosts by 67-52, taking a well needed 8 points. Top Rink was Brian Humphries, Derek Smith and Barrie Taylor, scoring 20-10.

W&E Ladies had to borrow a player for their friendly against hosts Cippenham. Despite losing 2 rinks to 1, it proved to be an enjoyable afternoon. The winning rink was Yvonne Hurley, Pauline Rawlings and the borrowed player, Peter Timmins! Peter was given the honorary name ‘Petra’ for the duration.

With KLV games now up to date, the ‘B’ team next faced the ‘A’ team. In a tight match, the ‘A’ team were victors overall by just 2 shots at 59-57. The rinks were split 2 to 1, also in their favour, giving the ‘A’ an 8 points to 2 win.

The ‘C’ team were at home against Windsor Great Park. Park have only one team in this league so are able to field their best players. It resulted in a small loss for W&E of 49-54. Winning one rink by 21-17 were Ian Hewitt, Dennis Borrowdale and Peter Blem, saving 2 points for W&E, with the remaining 8 going to Great Park.

On Saturday, the club made a short journey to Iver Heath for a weekend friendly, winning by the tightest margin of 98-97. Top rink on the day was Brian Mellor, Clive Dawson, John Giles and Pauline Hayward, scoring 26-10.

Players and guests representing six Isle of Wight clubs (collectively “The All Wights”) made a day trip across The Solent for a seven rink friendly match on Sunday. With such a large number of players, it was a jolly afternoon which ended with a narrow win for the visitors of 134-140. W&E’s top rink, with a remarkable 33-6 score was Clive Dawson, John Mayne, Margaret Hallett and Brian Parrish.

As this game was taking place, Club Captain Tony Scott was booking his ticket to the final of the Mens County Singles. Playing two matches on one day at Three Mile Cross, he first beat Trevor Mortimer, of Thatcham, 21-8 to win his quarter final tie. He then faced Scott Winskill of Tilehurst in the semi final, winning by 21-20. That single shot was enough to seal victory and put Scott into the final. It also qualifies him for entry into the preliminary round of the Mens Singles at the Bowls England National Championships, to be played at Leamington on 28th August.

The next day he enjoyed a 21-12 win over Tim Eales, of Maidenhead Town, in the semi final of the Champion of Champions. Both of the above finals are to be played at Bracknell on 4th August.

The KL team were at Bracknell where they lost by only 4 shots, 75-79, with Bracknell taking 10 points to W&E's 4. Top rink, with 26-18, was Chris Heitzmann, Eric Ireland, Barrie Taylor and Bret Long.
