Lowestoft and Oulton Broad Swimming Club's Open Meet followed on from last year's success.

Swimmers took part in races ranging from 50m sprints across all strokes on the Sunday, to the freestyle 800m for girls and 1500m for boys long distance events on the Saturday evening.

After a summer break, the swimmers may have been excused for perhaps not being at their best.

But there were 29 times recorded that qualified swimmers for the regional at Luton next year and many more times that ensured many of the club's swimmers qualified to swim at the Suffolk County Championships in February next year, with plenty of time left to top those numbers up before the closing dates.

The club welcomed some swimmers from Norwich Swans, Felixstowe SC, Farnham SC in Surrey, Flitwick Dolphins in Bedfordshire while it was great to see ex-LOBSC swimmer Mairi Walker and Ian Allen, currently based at Kenilworth SC. make the very long trip down to compete.

Ultimately, the event is held each year to raise valuable funds to ensure the continued existence of the club, helping fund essential equipment and thanks must go to the club's many sponsors and especially Ange & Co Estate Agents, Sentinel Leisure, Norton Peskett, Hughes and Stephenson Smart.

Together, with all activities, the club raised over £3,000 and officials would like to thank everybody involved.

Results can be found on the club website (www.lobsc.org.uk).

Meanwhile Jessica-Jane Applegate's hopes of competing at the World Para Swimming Championships in Mexico are over.

The original championships were called off after the country was rocked by an earthquake last month, with Applegate saying: 'It would have been a great opportunity to go for four gold medals, but it's just not safe for anyone to be out there at the minute.

'My thoughts are with everyone in Mexico.'

Now, British Swimming has made the decision not to attend the rescheduled event.

British Swimming chief executive Jack Buckner said: 'We understand that this decision is difficult for the athletes who worked hard to be at their best for the Championships but the safety and wellbeing of athletes and staff has to be our priority.'
