Report of the Mini Internationals

In the morning semi final against the Welsh, the Scots had a good win by 124 to 100 shots.
Three wining and three losing rinks.
The Irish overwhelmed the English in the other match.
In the afternoon final the Scots started strongly and were 28 shots up after 11 ends, it looked as if the Scots would win both the indoor and outdoor Minis in their Centenary year.
However, on an extremely warm afternoon it looked as if they ran out of energy as the Irish fought back strongly to level the match with three ends to go and overtook the Scots, winning by a margin of nine shots.
What turned out to be an encouraging start, ended in disappointment.
However, both matches were played in the right spirit and as usual ended with good food, good company and the usual camaraderie at the end of the da .
Congratulations to the Irish.

Report of the match against Bowls England

The match was played on a beautiful summers day on an excellent green which clearly suited the London Scottish Bowlers who won well on three rinks, drew on two and lost only one.
The match score was 118 to London Scottish and 89 for Bowls England.
The Bowls England players and guests along with the LSBA Officers met for an early buffet lunch followed by a group photograph

The following press release was sent to local press and with photograph and will hopefully appear in the local Watford press.

President Bob Alexander of the London Scottish Bowling Association, added that the Association is delighted that Bowls England will help us enjoy our 100th anniversary with a celebration match.
Although the Association was not founded until 1919, Scots bowlers in London met annually on the green to compete for the Rosebery Cup. This competition had been started in 1912 when an eminent Scottish Bowler induced his great friend, Lord Rosebery, to present to the E.B.A., a handsome silver cup for an annual bowls match between English and Scottish members of the Clubs under the jurisdiction of the E.B.A. and functioning within a radius of fifteen miles of Charing Cross.
This led to the formation of London Scottish Bowling Association in 1919. We had the pleasure of playing the E.B.A. on our 75th anniversary in 1994. We welcome Bowls England President Hazel Marke and her team in this our 100th year to Herts Bowling Club and hope they enjoyed the occasion as much as we did
Three of our Past Presidents, Bob Alexander, Jim Lumsden, Kennedy Brown, had also played in the 75th Anniversary match against Bowls England in 1994

Indoor Mini Internationals

Victory for the Scots in the Centenary Year

In the Indoor Mini International, played at Riverain Indoor Bowls Club on Sunday 14th April, London Scottish Bowling Association pulled off a historic victory in our centenary year by beating the London Welsh by eight shots in the morning Semi Final 79 shots to 71 and continued that good form to beat the London Irish in a nail-biting finish in the afternoon final by just one shot (73~72).
The Semi-Final against London Welsh was a close fought match with each side winning on two rinks and losing on two. At five ends the Scots had a ten shot lead (22-12), at 10 ends an eleven shot lead (40-29), at 15 ends the lead had extended to 18 (60-42) before the Welsh made a bit of a comeback to reduce the overall lead at the end of the match to eight shots (79-71).
In the afternoon final against London Irish the match went all the way to the last shot on the last end. At five ends the Irish led by 2 shots (18-2 ), at ten ends there was a three shot difference in favour of the Irish (-41), by the fifteenth end the Scots had rallied and took a lead of nine shots (62-53),the Irish then rallied and pulled the score back to nine shots on the twentieth end (73-64) and picked up 8 shots in the final end to leave the Scots with a one shot victory.
A great day was had by all and after the match at the evening meal, the Irish graciously congratulated the Scots in reaching a landmark 100 years as an Association and proposed a toast to the Association on their achievement and for the victory in the competition in their Centenary year. In his reply Bob Alexander President of London Scottish thanked all those who had taken part in this years event. He particularly mentioned the London Irish for their work in arranging the event and officiating on the day. Thanks were also extended to the host club Riverain for providing their facilities and for the excellent meals served throughout the day.
The Guinness Salver was then presented to the winning President by President Frank Oliver of the London Irish who again paid tribute to the Scots achievement in reaching 100 years. as an Association and wished the Association good bowling as it moved into it’s second century.
Well done to all those who took part. We now look forward to repeating the good form in the outdoor Mini International to be held at Sutton Bowls Club in September.
Come on ye Scots!!

The President and Officers hope you will support this event as we will be inviting special guests to help us celebrate this special year
Please advise me if you are interested in attending the lunch. Initially, attendance will be limited to members and wives/partners, but should there be availability, that may increase to include family and friends.

Message from Bob Alexander
President 2019 in London Scottish Centenary Year

Happy New Year to you all.

I feel very honoured and privileged to be your President in what I am sure will be a very hectic and exciting year for London Scottish
It is a wonderful achievement for an Association like ours to have carried on for 100 years and this is of course due in a great part to the hard work and commitment of the Officers who have served us so well through the year .
We owe a very special vote of thanks to our current Secretary/ Treasurer Jim Lumsden who has put in a tremendous amount of work on our behalf over the last couple of years in particular to ensure our Centenary year will be a success. Thank you Jim!
We have a varied and challenging fixture list for the year.
I hope you will put your names down for as many games as you can and try and put our hard working Match Secretaries in the position of having too many names for games rather than their having to chase around every week to make up the numbers as has been the case in recent years.
Please don't be too disappointed if you don't get picked for every game for which you nominat .
We are also very much looking forward to our bi-annual tour to Scotland which this year will be based in Bannockburn. Again we must thank Jim Lumsden for his efforts in organising the tour which has been very well supported and I am sure will be a great success.
I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the green throughout 2019.
Yours aye
Bob Alexander

Bob Guthrie Obituary
Past President Bob Guthrie died in hospital on Sunday 30th September 2018. He was admitted to hospital the week before with suspected pneumonia and died early on Sunday morning. Bob joined the Association in 1991 and served on the Council on two separate occasions. He was born in Kirkcudbright and joined the army aged 19 where he served for 26 years reaching the rank of Warrant Officer. He took up bowling when he left the army in 1986. He played his bowls at Cove Bowls Club and indoor at Camberley IBC. He was elected President of the Association in 2015 a position he was very proud to hold. Many will remember his tour to Dumfries during his year as President and the pride he displayed when visiting his home club in Kirkcudbright. Bob was a real character and will be missed by many. Details of the funeral will be circulated when known. We offer our sincere condolences to Bob"s wife Daphne and family.

Michael Patey Obituary
Michael Patey died on Monday 24th September following a lengthy battle with cancer. Although Michael was aware his condition was terminal, he kept a very positive outlook and was very strong for a number of months resisting the effects of his illness. He died in Woking Hospice where he had been looked after for the last week or ten days. Michael joined the Association in 2005. He was a member at Knaphill Bowls Club, a Past President of West Surrey Bowling Association and Midweek League Secretary of that Association. The 2018 Outdoor Mini Internationals

16th September 2018
The 2018 Outdoor Mini International was held at Sutton Bowls Club where the four home nations met once again to contest the 57th year of the Edward Guinness Trophy presented by Edward Guinness in 1961 for play between the Irish, Scottish Welsh and English Associations. On a grey Sunday morning, the players arrived for the normal cooked breakfast before the draw was made for the morning play. The Scots drew the English on the top green while the Irish drew the Welsh on the bottom Green. The Scots against the English was a very close fought match with only a few shots separating the teams, however, at the end it was the English who prevailed by just 10 shots. In the other match, the strong Irish team were too much for the Welsh to handle and won by a good margin to confirm their place in the afternoon final against the English. In the afternoon final played in warm sunshine, the Irish overcame the English to lift the trophy once again while the Scots just kept ahead of the Welsh, winning by a margin of 10 shots to finish in third place. The Trophy was presented by Sir Edward Guinness who in his 95th Year joined the players and officials for an excellent dinner provided by the host Club. Well done to all who took part.

A COPY OF THE SECRETARY's LETTER TO THE MEMBERSHIP

1 March 2018
Dear Member,
Please find enclosed the following documents for your information and consideration:
1) A letter from John Brechin, our new President;
2) The Association Year Book for 2018;
3) A match nomination form to be completed and returned to the Match Secretary; It would be very helpful if you could return the reply slip as early as possible to enable arrangements to be finalised in good time for the matches;
4) 2019 Centenary tour form.
Unfortunately, due to the number of matches cancelled last season because we were unable to field teams, the Council decided to reduce the number of fixtures for 2018 to twelve plus the Mini International. We hope there will be more support for these matches. We cannot continue to cancel matches, or we will lose the fixtures.
We have dropped the President v Vice Presidents match for this year due to lack of support for last years's match. So, the outdoor season gets underway on Saturday 2nd June with a match against the Royal Household BC who are celebrating their Centenary in 2018/2019. We hope there will be a good turnout to support our new President John in his first outdoor match.
Last year a letter was sent asking members to indicate interest for the Centenary tour to Stirlingshire in June 2019. Some 28 members responded. If you would like to attend, please complete the enclosed tour application form, and return it to me with a deposit of 50 pounds by 30th April 2018 to confirm your place(s). Partners and friends are very welcome and if we have enough ladies in the party, matches will include ladies rinks.
Can I remind members that annual subscriptions for 2018 were due for renewal on 1 October 2017. If your subscription is outstanding, we would appreciate early payment. The financial wellbeing of the association is dependent on members’ subscriptions. Please save me having to send out reminder letters/emails to chase payment.

Best wishes and good bowling in 2018

OBITUARY ~ JACK CONLEY

26 February 2018
Dear Member
I am sad to report the death of Jack Conley who died in hospital on Thursday 22nd February 2018 following a period of illness.
Jack joined the Association with his son Eric in 1989. He and Eric thought nothing of driving miles from Derbyshire to support the Association in friendlies, competitions and the Mini Internationals. He was a member of Long Eaton Town Bowls Club and Erewash IBC, in Derby.
Unfortunately Jack's health failed in recent years and he was unable to bowl, however he often travelled to matches with Eric and Irene to watch the game and meet old bowling friends.
We will miss Jack and offer Eric, Irene and the family our deepest sympathy on their sad loss
Details of the funeral are not yet known but Eric will advise when he has finalised the arrangements.
I hope those members who remember Jack will join me at the funeral to show our respects and to offer our condolences to Eric, Irene and their family.
Kindest regards
Jim

A message from the Hon Secretary about the 2015 Tour

Dear Member,
The next Association tour will be to the Dumfries & Galloway area from 21 – 28 June 2015.
Our President elect for that year Bob Guthrie, hopes you will be able to join him and help make it another successful venture for the Association.
I am please to report that Bob Alexander has agreed to organise this tour and those who have been on Bob’s tours in the past will know that it will be well organised and provide an opportunity for all to enjoy a weeks bowling and socialising in good company.
Please contact Bob as soon as possible and no later 28th February 2014 to indicate whether you are interested in attending. If there is sufficient interest Bob will proceed with the necessary arrangements and confirm the final cost.

A message from the Tour Organiser

2015 TOUR TO SCOTLAND
Dear Member,
I am waiting for confirmation from Bowls Scotland for permission for the Association to tour in the Dumfries and Galloway area from 21 - 28 June 2015. Our President elect for 2015 Bob Guthrie hopes that you will be able to join him on his tour. We will need a minimum of 24 bowlers to make the tour viable; however, on the evidence of previous years we should look for at least thirty bowlers to enable some to have a rest day.
It is too early to give a definitive cost but as a guide I expect it to be in the region of £450 per person. This will include accommodation, breakfast, coach for match travel, dinner on arrival, end of tour dinner and dance, all meals/green fees etc.
If you are interested in attending please contact me no later than 28 February 2014. It may appear rather early to ask for a commitment this far ahead, but it does take time to organise the event and hotels need plenty of notice for group bookings. If there is sufficient interest, you will be asked for a deposit to secure your place.
It is hoped as many as possible will support Bob and help make this another successful tour to Scotland. Those who have toured in the past know what an enjoyable time we have touring in our homeland. Those who have not yet attended a LSBA tour have clearly missed out – ask any of the previous tourists for their views.

An update on the 2015 Tour

The 2015 Tour to Scotland will be organised by Bob Alexander under the guidance of the President elect for 2015 ( Bob Guthrie). The tour will be to Kirkcudbright and District, probably based at Dumfries. However, we are awaiting further details from Bob Alexander after he seeks the approval from the Scottish Bowling Association to tour in Scotland.

REPORT FROM THE AGM

Dear Member
At the Annual General Meeting held at the Herts Club on Monday 23rd November 2015, Alan Bennet was elected President for 2016. Alan was born in Edinburgh, and proud of it, his family moved him around Scotland before settling in Galashiels for several years. By the time he reached the age of 10, they had moved again to Lancashire, where he received his senior education. However, he couldn't wait to return to Scotland and spent the first 10 years of his working life back in Edinburgh. This was followed by a career move to England where he spent the next 30 years of his working life. He retired in 2000 from his position as Pensions Director at Whitbread. He started bowling in 1981 at Knaphill BC and has been a member there ever since. During that time he was Competition Secretary for 20 years, an active President for 11. He is now Club Secretary. Alan has won his Club's Championship three times and various other competitions at least once. In 2013 he and his partner reached the semi-final of the National Over-60 Pairs, he has also been successful in a number of area competitions over the years. He joined Egham Indoor BC when it opened in 1985 and has won the Club's Triples and Fours. He has played for Surrey in both disciplines for a number of years. He joined London Scottish BA in 1996 and has been a Council member for the last five years. Alan is a Trustee of a substantial pension scheme and a charity, he has several other interests including golf, reading and computing. As can be seen from this profile, Alan has considerable experience in key officer roles and we are delighted to have him as our President.

The remaining offices were filled as follows:
Senior Vice President Harry Bainbridge
Junior Vice President John Brechin
Honorary Secretary Jim Lumsden
Honorary Treasurer Jim Lumsden
Outdoor Match Secretary Alan Bennet
Indoor Match Secretary Bill Dickie
Tours Organiser Vacant
Publicity Officer Ian Gillies
Outdoor Fixture Secretary Bob Alexander (Co-opted)
Indoor Fixture Secretary Kennedy Brown (Co-opted)
Immediate Past President 2015 Bob Guthrie
Immediate Past President 2014 John Cameron
Council Member Alistair Simpson
Council Member Eric Finestone

We are fortunate to have such a strong and committed group to manage our Association and we look forward to a successful year in 2016.
Grateful thanks were offered to the outgoing President Bob Guthrie for his leadership and contribution during his year in office, particularly his effort to raise funds through raffles and his enthusiasm and drive to recruit new members.

Change to Dress Code

The following resolution was passed by the members at the meeting: As from the start of the 2016 outdoor season the Association will adopt the Blue & White polo shirt as the preferred shirt for all games except that, any member who does not have one or does not wish to purchase/wear one can continue to wear the white dress shirt and Association tie. It would continue to be a requirement to wear a white shirt and Association tie on arrival for matches and for the meal after the match. At the meeting the Secretary provided the following information on the status of members with regards to polo shirts. Of the total membership of 105 there are approximately 80 playing members. Of that total 57 currently own an Association polo shirt. While it is hoped that the remaining 23 members will consider purchasing a polo shirt for future matches, it was agreed at the AGM that members who do not have one may continue to wear a white dress shirt with Association tie for matches. However, for those who wish to order a polo shirt they can be ordered from the Secretary at the cost of £21.00. It normally takes 6/8 weeks for delivery which gives a reasonable time scale to order and have shirts available for the start of the outdoor season.

OBITUARY - ALEX HAY

Dear Member
I am sad to report the recent death of Alex Hay who died peacefully at home on Wednesday 28th October 2015. Alex suffered a stroke some years ago and never really recovered full mobility. As a result, his general health deteriorated and he has recently been confined to bed following an unsuccessful operation in hospital. His wife Alison and daughter Debbie were at his bedside when he passed away. Alex joined the Association in 1994. He was a member at Oxhey Grange Bowls Club in Watford and represented the Association in the Mini International on a number of occasions. His enthusiasm, cheery smile and dry sense of humour will be missed by those who had the pleasure of knowing him. The funeral will take place at the West Herts Crematorium, High Elms Lane, Garston, Watford, WD25 0JS on Friday 13th November 2015 at 1.20 pm. LONDON SCOTTISH BOWLING ASSOCIATION

Newsletter Spring 2015

Wanted, any information as to the whereabouts of these two leaders of Nomads that are currently upsetting the Villagers and Townspeople of rural England.

The leader is sometimes known as Thunder Bob or is it God!,as many witnesses have apparently gone deaf from being in the same area when he gives orders. It is also rumoured that Thunder Bob’s voice can crack wine glasses at 100 yards and window panes tremble on their frames.
This brings us to the Second in Command of this unruly mob! The quiet man Alan who keeps “Thunder” on the rails. To look at him you would be forgiven for thinking he wouldn’t hurt a fly with his silver tongue and rapier wit lulling you with the feeling that not all nomads are bad. Wrong. These guys work as a team, good cop, bad cop.
Anyone who would like to know more about these men can view their rap sheets on the website.

An Ode by David Miller

WHO WE ARE

Proud is the moment when we share
MacDuff – the tartan that we wear!
Deliver bowls without a care:
Hae worries naught.
Brocht tae the south a certain flair –
The London Scot.

Around Home Counties we have bowled
We’ve drove for miles in Winter’s cauld
We’ve won and lost, with tales oft told
Some guid, some not.
But tartan ties will ne’er be sold
By London Scot.

We’ve been around for money a year;
We’ve made our presence unco clear;
We’ve made the Welsh an’ Irish fear
Oor mini slot.
We’ve some whose bools are their career -
The London Scot.

Oor booling taks us far an’ wide;
‘Roon London, an’ elsewhere beside;
Tae Essex, Surrey, e’en up tae the Clyde:
Travel bug we’ve got.
We wear oor colours wi’ sic pride –
Each London Scot.

Oor President now is “Guthrie, Bob”
Nae shrinking violet in any mob:
So don’t dare call him a Xenophobe!
Else that’s your lot!
They say that once – a real heartthrob –
This London Scot.

Remember worship every year?
At Crown Court Church – fur a’, quite near.
There’s naething said ‘boot which tae fear;
It’s thanks, He’s sought,
Fur giving us a birthright clear –
A London Scot.

So Bob was added to the list
Of Officers in whom we trusr:
Whose names suggest an upper crust
Of great and good.
He’d work richt hard and mak’ nae fuss:
This London Scot.

My challenge tae each hearing this –
Gie a’ ye have without a fuss;
Support the Team – stay one of us.
Do as ye ought.
Enjoy your bools, keep calm, nonplus,
As London Scot.

FINALLY

If you don’t like horror stories, or are fainthearted, do not continue reading this article, but if you are made of sterner stuff – Carry On Jock.
The indoor season never really took off for the Scots, losing the first three games in a row. Things started looking better when we won the next few on the trot with one game cancelled! It seemed that the New Year boded well for us; won four lost four drawn one. Alas it was a false dawn, we only won two games out of the next nine. The mini started well, Scots beating the English in the morning, but crashed against the Irish, losing on all rinks. We can take some comfort from having beaten the Irish outside in the mini last year; and hope to do so again this year.
See you all on the green,

Yours Aye,

Election of Officers & Council Members for 2015

At the Annual General Meeting held at the Herts Club on Monday 24th November 2014, Bob Guthrie was elected as Association President for 2015.
Bob joined the Association in 1991 and has served on Council on two separate occasions. He was born in Kirkubright and joined the army aged 19 where he served for 26 years reaching the rank of Warrant Officer. He took up bowling when he left the army in 1986. Bob lives in Yateley and plays his bowls outdoors at Cove Bowls Club in Hampshire. Before joining Cove he was a member at Great Holland where he was Secretary, and Bracknell Bowls Club where he was Captain. He also bowls indoor at Camberley Indoor Bowling Club.
In addition to winning the Singles and mixed pairs titles at Great Holland, Bob won the Novices Cup and Pairs Championships at Bracknell. He was runner-up in the Berkshire County Singles, twice runner-up in the Berkshire County Triples and once in the County Pairs.
Bob is well qualified to lead the Association and we wish him every success in his year as our President.

I am pleased to confirm that Alan Bennet has agreed to fill the office of Senior Vice President vacated by Richard Shepherd following his relocation to Chelmsford. We would like to thank Richard for his service on as Junior Vice President and a member of Council. We hope he will continue to play for the Association in matches within reasonable travelling distance.
Alan, our new Senior Vice President was born in Edinburgh, and proud of it, Alan's family moved him around Scotland before settling in Galashiels for several years.
During that time he was Competition Secretary for 20 years, an active President for 11 and is now Club Secretary. He has won his Club's Championship three times and its various other competitions at least once. In 2013 he and his partner reached the semi-final of the National Over-60 Pairs, and he has also been successful in a number of area competitions over the years.
He joined Egham Indoor BC when it opened in 1985 and has won the Club's Triples and Fours. He has played for Surrey in both disciplines for a number of years. He joined London Scottish BA in 1996 and has been a Council member for the last four years.
Alan is a Trustee of a substantial pension scheme and of a charity, a pensions adviser with a national organisation, and has several other interests including golf, reading and computing.
As can be seen from the above profile, Alan has considerable experience in key officer roles at club level and we are delighted to welcome him to the role of Senior Vice President.

We are also pleased to confirm the election of Harry Bainbridge as Junior Vice President. Harry was born in Twickenham. His mother, a McNeil was from Glasgow. He was educated in Ashford in Middlesex before joining the Co-op as a baker roundsman. He joined H.M. forces shortly after where he reached the rank of full Corporal and Tank Commander in the 4th Tank Regiment, Scotland’s own tank regiment. Harry served at the Redford barracks in Edinburgh and spent time in the Far East. He took part in action in Aden, working with the Army Air Corp on fixed wing and rotary aircraft, he also served in Malaya.
After serving for 12 years Harry left to join the British Airport Authorities (B.A.A.) as a Standards Officer responsible for training and development and ensuring airports in the U.K. complied with government legislation. He retired in 2007 after 30 years service.
Harry is a relative newcomer to the Association. He joined in 2010 and has served on Council for one year. He is a member at Windsor Great Park B.C. outdoor and Camberley Indoor Bowling Club. He has already shown his ability on the green by reaching the semi final of his clubs triples, rinks and novices cup in recent years.
Married to Christine he has a daughter who works with the police and a son who is a motor mechanic.
We are pleased to welcome him as Junior Vice President and look forward to working with him in his new role.

Scots Triumph over Irish & Welsh

After a reasonably successful outdoor season where we won nine and lost nine matches, we came strong at the end of the season by winning the Edward Guinness Trophy at the Mini International played at Sutton B.C at the end of September. After a hearty breakfast, the draw paired us with the Irish, not the best draw first thing in the morning but with two strong winning rinks skipped by Jim Lumsden and Peter Anthony and a strong finish by Alan Bennet who saved four shots with the last bowl of the match, the Scots won by five shots.
In the afternoon final against the Welsh, we had a runaway victory winning by 43 shots.
The Trophy was presented to President John Cameron at the presentation dinner in the evening.
Well done to all who took part. You can tell the lads were happy!!

Welcome our new Members

We extend a warm welcome to the following new members who have joined our ranks since the last edition.
Ian White: Born in Berkshire, Ian’s grandparents came from the Glasgow area. He is a member at Tilehurst Bowls Club in Reading.
George Martin: Born in Fife, George lives in Westcliffe in Essex. He is a member at Bournemouth Park B.C. (Southend) and Southend Indoor Bowls Club
They can be sure of a warm welcome to the Association and we look forward to meeting and playing bowls with them in the months ahead.

The “Two Bobs” Tour:

Now that the Independence issue has been settled and we don’t have to rush out to secure a visa for entry to our homeland, we look forward to invading the Dumfries and Galloway District for our annual tour to Scotland. The numbers have increased to around 34, deposits are paid and the Cairndale Hotel in Dumfries has been booked from 21-28 June 2015. Those who attended the previous tour to the area will know that the hotel is in an ideal location and we will be made most welcome.
A match against Kirkcudbright B.C, the President elect’s home club has been arranged and we can look forward to a warm welcome from the locals who remember the last time we descended upon them.
Those who have toured in the past will know what an enjoyable time we have touring in our homeland. You are guaranteed an enjoyable week of bowls plus a very active social side.
We hope some of our home based members will make the effort to visit us at the Cairndale or come along to any of the fixtures for a catch up and a few drinks.

Obituary - David Ingles

Dear Member
I am sad to report the death of David Ingles. As many of you know Dave has
been unwell for some months as a result of a heart and lung condition. He was recently admitted to hospital and although he was released, he was using oxygen to keep his lungs functioning. There are no further details at this stage but Jock McCreadie, who as some of you know has been caring for Dave on and off, will get in touch with his contacts in an attempt to get further information. I will provide you with an update as soon as it becomes available. Dave was a member around 25 years and during that time was a great supporter of the Association. He was very proud of his Scottish origins and proud to play for the London Scottish.
He will be greatly missed.
Regards
Jim Lumsden

12th April 2013

Tour to Falkirk 2013

The arrangements will shortly be finalised for the Association’s Tour to Falkirk from 13 to 19 July 2013.
Accommodation has been reserved at the Park Hotel in Falkirk.
The Hotel is located close to the Town Centre and is also close to the Falkirk Wheel
en suite bedrooms and suites, free car parking restaurants/cafes.
Unfortunately there are a limited number of single rooms and these are charged at premium rates, so the appropriate number of double and twin rooms have been reserved for our party.
If you feel you need a single room please contact the Tour Organiser.

Matches are almost confirmed.
It is hoped to include two ladies matches if there are sufficient ladies to make up two rinks.

The estimated cost subject to confirmation of coach travel is £450.00 per person.
This includes seven nights’ bed and breakfast, dinner on arrival and an end of tour Dinner Dance, the cost of travelling to matches, green fees and catering,
but does not include the cost of travelling from home to Falkirk and back.
The Council regret the increasing cost of the tour but is afraid that this is the inevitable result of inflation, rising costs and hotel charges.
A very fair price has been negotiated at the hotel which offers very good facilities.

To confirm your place, please make your final payment no later than 15th May 2013

It is hoped that you will support the President ~ David Neilson and help to make this another successful tour to Scotland.

Those who are attending for the first time are in for a treat.

David Neilson, the Tour Organiser, looks forward to receiving confirmation and final payments

Falkirk Tour 2013

Dear Member,
I am waiting for confirmation from the Scottish Bowling Association for the LSBA to tour in Falkirk from 13 - 20 July 2013.
As President Elect I hope you will be able to join me on my tour year.
We will need a minimum of 24 bowlers to make the tour viable. However, on the evidence of last year’s experience, when we had a number of “walking wounded” we should look for at least thirty bowlers to enable some to have a rest day.
It is too early to give a definitive cost but as a guide I expect it to be in the region of £450 per person. This will include accommodation, breakfast, coach for match travel, dinner on arrival, end of tour dinner and dance, all meals/green fees etc.
It may appear rather early to ask for a commitment this far ahead, but it does take time to organise the event and hotels need plenty of notice for group bookings. If there is sufficient interest, you will be asked for a deposit in May 2012 to secure your place.
It is hoped as many as possible will support me in my Presidential year and help make this another successful tour to Scotland. Those who have toured in the past know what an enjoyable time we have touring in our homeland. Those who have not yet attended a LSBA tour have clearly missed out – ask any of the previous tourists for their views.
If you are interested in attending please complete and return the form sent to you recently to the Tours Organiser no later than 30 April 2012.

LONDON SCOTTISH BOWLING ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER 2013

Here is a review of the year so far.
Indoor results – played 14, cancelled 4, won 4, lost 10; not a good run-up to the mini!
The highlight  of the indoor season was of course winning the Mini International by beating our nemesis the Irish in the morning in a nail-biter (aren’t they always) winning by 2 shots, 74 to 72.
After a relaxing lunch and a pint, the Scots romped home against the Welsh who had beaten the English in the morning session so were on a high, but after ten ends they realised what they were up against. 54 - 26 for the Scots who then galloped the last furlong to the finishing post and won on all 4 rinks by 42 shots, the score – Scots 98, Welsh 47.
A great victory, for a full report on this exciting match go on the website and read Bob Dalrymple’s version of events.
It is nice to see old friends return to the Scots, I’m talking about Bob Dickie,Hamish Anderson,Allan Craig and Ted & Kevin Stewart who all rejoined this year. Welcome back gentlemen.
On the subject of membership, we would like to extend a warm welcome to our new members, George and Andrew Raeburn of Springfield BC Acton; Garry Oliver and Ian Hogg who both play indoors for King George IBC; John Allan & Anthony Charles, Streatham Park BC; Andrew McKain, Milton Park BC Pompey; and Eric Marriner, Potters Bar. Ian MacKay, I Ford BC, Daniel Bette, William BC and Alan Scott, Linslade BC.
We had two deaths of longstanding members, past President Alex Colquhoun and member Ian Black. Both funerals were well represented by Officers and members of the Association.

The 39th London Scottish Tour to Falkirk

Fun and Frolics at Falkirk
On arrival at the Park Hotel a piper, in full regalia, welcomed John Cameron and me into reception. What a greeting, we thought! David had really laid out the red carpet for the Scots, we were about to congratulate him on his efforts only to see a wedding party following us, the bride blushing and the groom looking proud. Still, it set the tone for the tour – nobody knows.
The hotel was very good, the rooms were nice and the food was excellent, with self-service breakfast and other options available e.g. kippers, haddock or fried eggs, so everyone was happy.
John Duncan arrived late, having been held up by an accident on the motorway. While he was stationary, two nearby drivers noticed that he had a puncture (from the debris). They kindly changed the wheel for him; who says chivalry is dead?
Jocky, Peter and John were also delayed when the train they were on broke down. It has been reported that Jocky informed the passengers that the brakes had seized on and kept them entertained for the rest of the journey. As they couldn’t get off, they really were a captive audience – lucky them!
In the evening everyone arrived at the tables for dinner, the instructions being dress “smart casual”. John Cameron’s late entrance brought a round of applause, we thought he was the resident magician, so flamboyant was his dress. Unperturbed by the reception, John replied “This is me” pause, “smart and casual”. We had a great dinner, everybody enjoyed it, and those who wanted, retired to the bar, being pleasantly surprised to find that the price of a pint was only 10p more than the pubs in the town. Obviously the bar was jumping, with the wedding party, it was all very jolly and we all got on famously, it was kilts to the left, kilts to the right and everybody enjoyed themselves except for those who were kept awake through the night.
Sunday morning, all the tourists had breakfast before the rush started, some of the wedding party were still in their highland gear and at 9.30 you could not get a seat in the restaurant. After the visit to the Church for those who went, we got on the bus to Burnhead B.C. which consisted of a lovely clubhouse and a good-looking green, which played well. It was a sunny day and the members of the club gave us a great welcome starting with the first pint free. It even got better after that, when the opposite number and you had a wee visit to the bar every three ends, or it seemed like every three ends, I’m not too sure. Our skips reckoned we played 18 ends, but it seemed less. Suffice to say everybody had a great time and enjoyed a steak pie dinner followed by ice cream and entertainment provided; we didn’t want to get on the bus. Peter Noden and Jimmy Lindsay were in fine voice for the Scots. A great start to the tour! Oh, the result, we won 67-51 with the highest winning rink of Don Constable, myself, Ron Hill (I only play indoors) and our skip John Brechin.
Monday morning, check the swindle, I won sharing with Sue Dickie, who couldn’t believe it, “I’ve never won a swindle before” she surely did, well done Sue. After lunch, a brisk walk for the youngsters and a lift in the car for the bowls bags and the few walking wounded took us to Camelon B.C. A big clubhouse (they all seem to be up here) and two greens, East and West, we played on the former as they had a top ten game that evening on West. The green wasn’t very green; a sort of scabby brown, but it was fast and had some weird draws, almost like indoors. They were a friendly crowd and we all got on well with each other, sharing jokes and having a few drinks. The highest wining rink, Jimmy Lindsay, John Duncan, Jim Wood and John Brechin (again). Their shot difference of 15 meant that we won overall 64-54. It was a bit of let-down at dinner though, the Camelons had only catered for us (how strange) so we sat at one long table, the 24 of us and ate – wait for it - yes steak pie. The swindle was won by Sue Dickie again, shared with John Brechin.
Tuesday, a day to ourselves and every tour member became an explorer, with their own tales of voyages and destinations.
Wednesday, with an evening game at Grangemouth we had a free afternoon to do a bit of shopping or visiting old friends before the coach left at 5p.m. Upon arrival we were met by friendly faces and a refreshing drink. A good time was had by all, the green played well but the result was disappointing, we went down 44 shots for, 59 against. The highest winning rink were John Templeton, Jock McCreadie, Alan Dick and John Allan. This is where we enter the realms of “nobody knows”, the scorecards were kept by the opposition, so I haven’t a clue how the individual rinks scored. Then the meal – steak pie – I’m getting to like it!
On Thursday we had been promised a mystery coach tour, the mystery was, where was the coach? Eventually at 5p.m a coach arrived and we were off to Denny B.C. When we got there the bar wasn’t open, and we were the only people there. The cry went up “What’s happening?” – nobody knows. The opposition began arriving in dribs and drabs and by the time we had changed, the bar had opened and a pleasant evening began. It was a tight game; we lost by 6 shots, 65 for, 71 against. Our highest winning rink was Bill Dickie, Shanks Jack and Ray Gall.As you will have realised by now, our past President, Shanks Jack, Ray Gall and his wife Maggie were invited to play with Margaret playing for the opposition. She had to borrow shoes, borrow bowls, and she was on top form; unfortunately she played against my rink, which we lost. President David claimed a win overall as the opposition had borrowed our players. Lovely supper, steak pie!! followed by strawberry and pineapple tarts, I brought a couple of each back for John Cameron, who was at the hotel unable to play.
Friday after lunch, we were off to Stenhousemuir, the bus parked right outside the entrance to the clubhouse. The sun was shining; people were shaking hands and smiling in welcome, makes the heart stir. We followed the same routine during the game, taking it in turns to have a wee whiskey and a chat after a couple of ends. After the game we had a little sing-song and bade our farewells and headed for home – no scorecards again. We lost 44 to 56, highest winning rink, Ron Hill, Marge Brechin, Ian Gillies and Peter Noden.
Overall scores for the whole tour were for 285, against 291, not a bad result.
The dress for the end of tour dinner and dance was smart, casual, again, except for the president, who wore a kilt.   After the photo shoot, we made our way to the Empire Suite, which was really well laid out, we sat where we liked, except for the top table of course. Choice of chair also determined our raffle prizes, for instance, I got a bottle of wine, Don Constable, sitting next to me, got a litre bottle of gin, and sitting opposite me, and Jimmy Lindsay got a bottle of Glenfiddich!! This really went down well with everybody. The menu was steak pie or chicken, it’s amazing how many went for chicken! It was a great dinner and dance, during the proceeds we were handed an envelope which contained a rebate of £15.00 each. Just as well we had a rebate, what with the fines and the auction, we had need of it. I would like to thank our President David and his wife Anne for a wonderful tour, which was so laid back it was refreshing. Well done the tourists, and well done the President, see you in two years time.

Tour Gossip

John Cameron didn’t feel well after the game at Burnhead, showing concern, his opposite number called his doctor for an appointment for John the next morning. Incredibly, he got it and picked John up from the hotel and delivered him to the doctor who, (not Doctor Who) then rang John’s doctor in London and sorted out his prescription, which John had got muddled up. Isn’t that wonderful, takes me three weeks to see my doctor. PS, John survived the week and is convalescing at home, no bowls for a while, get well soon John.
John Duncan’s run-in with the accident debris caused more damage than a puncture; his front bumper was hanging off. David Neilson arranged for a mate to come and check it out, he repaired it and John got home safe and sound.
Alan Dick handed in a sick note to the President, as he didn’t feel well, so got off playing that day and had a quiet day in the hotel to recuperate.
The tourists and the tour were blessed by a rare heat wave for Scotland, no rain and no midges.

Yours Aye,
Ian Gillies, Publicity Officer.

Presidents –v- Vice Presidents match Sunday 11th May 2013

25 members plus five partners took part in what turned out to be a very pleasant afternoons bowls.
The President appeared to have luck on his side when he drew a strong rink.
This turned out to be correct as he won the the highest rink prize.
The Senior Vice President, John Cameron presented the winners shield to President David Neilson, who thanked all for turning up for this annual event.
A good day was had by all!

MINI INTERNATIONAL REPORT (INDOOR 2013)

The Selection Committee had a very harrowing time in selecting the squad of players from those who nominated for it.

The Selection Committee had an even harder job in selecting the eventual team without hurting anyone's feelings.

There were only two reserves on the final team sheet, but there were actually more.

On the day we fielded the following team.

Rink Lead Two Three Skip

1 B Dickie S McKay B Alexander J Lumsden
2 K Brown I Urqhart R Christie E Conley
3 D Wallace B Dalrymple F Morton D Ingles
4 R Roberts J Cameron J Burns A Bennet

In the morning game we drew our oldest rivals, the London Irish, the draw we least wanted for the first game
As usual a very hard fought game followed with no quarter given by either side accompanied with all the usual friendly banter.

The scores were as follows

After 5 ends Scots 24 Irish 15

After 10 ends Scots 44 Irish 29

After 15 ends Scots 59 Irish 52

After 18 ends Scots 65 Irish 65

After 21 ends Scots 74 Irish 72

A very well desrved win by 2 shots. It was all down to the last 2 ends on Eric Conley's rink. Eric pulled off a great shot on the 20th end ~ all square and all to play for. On the last end the Scots were holding 2 shots but the Irish took one out. Eric drew another shot. The Irish skip missed with his last bowl. What a nailbiter but we did it.

In the afternoon we had to play the London Welsh who beat the English in their first game.
The final was fought like our lives depended on the result, and again no quarter was given by either side

The scores were as follows

After 5 ends Scots 25 Welsh 13

After 10 ends Scots 54 Welsh 26

After 15 ends Scots 72 Welsh 38

After 18 ends Scots 82 Welsh 46

After 21 ends Scots 89 Welsh 47

A very well deserved victory considering that Eric's rink only played 19 ends.
We won on all four rinks in the final with a resounding 42 shot win.
The top skip in the morning was Eric Conley and in the afternoon it was Dave Ingles
Many thanks to J Brechin & A Greenall our two reserves on the day.

There is an old saying COMETH THE HOUR COMETH THE MAN

Well we rewrote that with

COMETH THE DAY , COMETH THE LONDON SCOTTISH

A very BIG thank you to all who took part in making this a very special day and winning the trophy back again.

Alex was a Past President of Worcester County Bowling Association and President of the London Scottish Bowling Association in 1995.
He was a founder member of the Herts Indoor Bowling Club and made
a major contribution to its building and development.
His portrait can be seen on the wall in the bar and will serve as a memorial
to a well known and respected member.
Our thoughts are with his wife Joan and his family.   Funeral details will
follow when known.
  Regards
  Jim Lumsden

BBQ Update

Unfortunately, the barbecue has been cancelled due to a neighbouring club being burnt down resulting in David Neilson's club offering  facilities until the problem is resolved. This means that the club will be in use every weekend and as a result we have had to cancel the event.

Ian Black

We regret to report the death of Ian Black on Thursday 13 December 2012. Ian was a member of the Association for many years joining us after a distinguished career as a footballer.
Born in 1924, Ian began his footballing career with his hometown club of Aberdeen in 1944 before moving to Southampton for £1000 in 1947. Shortly after joining Saints he made his one and only appearance for Scotland in a 2-0 defeat against England at Hampden Park. He later joined Fulham where he made 277 appearances. He retired from football in 1964.
After his footballing career Ian ran a sports shop in Tolworth, Surrey. It was during this period he developed a keen interest in bowls and he represented Surrey County Bowling Association indoor and outdoor. He was secretary of his club in Tolworth into his seventies and played well into his eighties. He last played for the association at Wey valley about three years ago.

The funeral will take place at Randalls Park Crematorium, Randalls Road, Leatherhead, Surrey, KT22 0AG at 3.30pm on Friday 28 December 2012.

We offer our deepest sympathy to Ian’s family.

News from the Annual General Meeting

The following is an update following the Annual General Meeting Held at the Herts Club on Monday 26th November 2012

The meeting was only attended by nineteen members despite an appeal to all those living within a reasonable travelling time from Watford, and there were 20 apologies.

The meeting was opened by President Alan Dick who welcomed those present to the meeting.

This was followed by the Acting Secretary’s Report.
At 30 September 2012 the membership stood at 130 including 3 Life Members.
10 years ago we had 272 members but this is of course very much in line with what is happening elsewhere in our sport.
But if we are to survive we will have to work at increasing our numbers.
We recruited eleven new members in the year, however on the down side we had eight resignations and four deaths and Under Rule 5 of our Constitution, 11 members have been removed from the Register. Overall a reduction of 12.
Members Jimmy Bayne, Malcolm McKenzie, Don Tilbury and Bob Anderson died in the year, and the Association is grateful to all Officers and members who have attended funerals as representatives of London Scottish. I know that their presence was much appreciated.

The Treasurer's report was presented by the Honorary Treasurer
The accounts to 30 September 2012 show a healthy bank balance of £9,704.
2011/2012 resulted in income of £7886 against expenses of £8,224 a deficit of £337
Membership Subscriptions totalled £1164 from 97 paying members.
Despite reminder letters, 30 member’s subscriptions remained overdue as at 30 September 2012 and of this total 11 are two years overdue and in accordance with the rules of the Association, they will be removed from the list of members.
Miscellaneous expenses of £682 included payment of a Presidents Allowance (£300); donations to the Herts Club and Caledonian Schools Trust (£100 to each)and other normal costs of running the Association e.g. bowls stickers, engraving, etc..
Sales of stock (badges, ties, blazer badges, jackets and polo shirts etc.) amounted to £436 down from £1210 last year, a tour year.
The Association has cash assets of £9,814 and stock assets of £3450, total assets of £13,264
It is hoped that the members agree that the Association remains in a healthy financial position.

We had a difficult Outdoor season in 2012.
Because the Association did not have a Match Secretary, the Officers and Council members were called upon to manage the matches.
Four matches were cancelled, one by us, three by the opposition and, we were only able to field a full team in three of our 17 matches. Fortunately we were able to call on guests to fill the empty spaces on the team sheets.
That aside we had a reasonably successful season in with 10 wins and 7 losses from the 17 games played.
Regrettably, we were unable to hold on to the Edward Guinness Trophy losing to the London Irish in the morning by 63 shots, having beaten the Welsh by 45 shots in the afternoon.
The Officers of the Day did a terrific job in what were difficult circumstances, and thanks are due to all of them for their hard work in keeping the match organisation and administration to a high standard enabling us to complete the fixtures without any evidence of the problems faced.

We had a reasonably successful Indoor season in 2011/12 with 10 wins and six defeats from the 16 games played. Two games were cancelled, one due to adverse weather the other by the opposition.
In the Mini International we beat the English by a margin of 63 shots in the morning in our efforts to maintain the silver Salver.
However, it was not to be our year when, in the afternoon final we met the London Irish eventually losing by a mere seven shots in what turned out to be a nail biting finish.
Well done to all those who took part.
Bob Dalrymple was thanked for getting teams together so that we could fulfil our fixture obligations.

Bob Alexander and Kennedy Brown were thanked for their work in arranging the Outdoor and Indoor fixture lists and for providing a varied and interesting set of matches.
There is a lot of work done behind the scenes and we should recognise their efforts on our behalf.

The tour to Falkirk in July 2013 is currently being finalised and the Senior Vice-President David Neilson was thanked for the work done in co-ordinating the arrangements.
To date numbers are lower than anticipated and members are asked to support David by attending.
There are still places available and David will be happy to hear from any members who might be interested in visiting Falkirk.

Our President Alan Dick did a great job in his year as President. Alan led from the front, playing in all our matches and keeping us in order during the after match formalities.
It is hoped that he enjoyed his year as much as we enjoyed having him as our President.

Our President elect David Neilson is wished the best of luck and it is hoped that he has a memorable year.
He has the support of a dedicated group of Officers and Council Members.

Newsletter Autumn 2012

THAT HURT
The outdoor season was upon us, and we hadn’t even got into our stride when wham bam thank you mam, we lost three games on the trot. But we jocks rallied to come out at the end of the season winners overall, having won 10, lost seven, with shots for (my birth year) 1942, shots against 1822 (any offers?)

We had four games cancelled, three by the opposition, and one by us. Of the 17 games actually played, we had to recruit 53 guest players in order to fulfil our fixture list. Whilst we thank our guests for representing the Scots, we should be able to fill our rinks with our own members.

Here are some figures to consider:
members played – 66,
members who didn’t play – 78.
Makes sad reading, let’s try to do better next year.

Talking about membership, we had 11 new members this year, and we welcome them with open arms and hope to see them on the rink. By the way, the AGM will take place on 26 November, 7.15 at Herts Bowling Club, Watford as usual. The theme this year is “bring a friend”, the more the merrier.

GET WELL SOON
We send our best wishes for a speedy recovery to Bob Guthrie, Malcolm MacKenzie and Bob Dalrymple who just recently was admitted to hospital with a collapsed lung. We need you boys up and running as soon as possible.

NOW THE SAD NEWS
It was with deep regret that we said goodbye to two good friends and fellow members this year.
Life member James Bayne died in June and Robert (Bob) Anderson in October. They will be missed.

            SLEEPING IN SUTTON
The Scots were caught napping when they were drawn to meet the Irish in the first game in the morning. They, the Irish, were out of their blocks and running, by the time we woke up it was too late, we gave our best and made a game of it but to no avail.
There was a ray of light further up the green, a face-saving winning rink of Bill Dickie, Peter Kay and Finlay Morton skipped by one who wishes to remain anonymous, with a great 21 to 10 shot win. Well done lads. The Scots lost 82 for 145 against it was certainly a quiet lunch for us!
Bob Anderson came along to watch, sadly the last time we were to see him.
Cometh the hour, cometh the man; the two reserves stepped in against the Welsh, who had been beaten in the morning by the English and were still shell-shocked and we went on to win by 136 to 91 shots. And guess what, the highest winning rink was again led by the man with no name and his trusty side-kicks, with a score of 26 to 13. It was  a good day out and as usual well organised.

Congratulations to our Irish friends on winning the Guinness trophy this year (but watch out next year!)

                   2013  TOUR
Tour to Falkirk 13 to 19 July 2013, there are still places available.

INDOOR SEASON
Match secretary Bob Dalrymple asks any members who have not yet returned their nomination slips to please do so. He needs more names for games 7, 14, 15, and 17, please do your best to help out.

See you at the AGM on the 26th November

September 20th 2012

Mini International – The Guinness Trophy

Unfortunately we were unable to retain the trophy this year. Drawing the Irish in the morning we lost heavily.
However we were able to avoid the wooden spoon by beating the Welsh comfortably in the afternoon.
The Irish beat the English easily in the final.

The results were as follows:

Sunday 16th September 2012 at 09.30 am at Sutton B.C. Belmont, Surrey.
Semi Final:
London Scottish BA 82 shots –v- London Irish B.A. 145
Top Rink: Bill Dickie, Peter Kay, Finlay Morton, Name withheld.
Won by 21 shots to 10
  Play Off for third place:
London Scottish 136 shots -v- London Welsh B.A. 91
Top Rink: Bill Dickie, Peter Kay, Finlay Morton, Name withheld.
Won by 26 shots to 13

Your Association Needs You !

A message from the Association Council

As you know, the outdoor season gets underway this weekend with the annual President v Vice Presidents match to be played at the Herts Club in Watford.
The nomination forms for matches have been sent out to all members, but to date we have only received 55 replies from 145 members.
This is disappointing and means that there are a number of games where we are well short of the numbers required to make up a team.
Cancelling matches is not good for the Association's reputation and can result in us loosing fixtures, so every member needs to nominate for three games to meet our playing commitments.
The Council would be grateful if you would please let the Hon Secretary know as a matter of urgency, if you will be able to play in any games this outdoor season.
  Your Association needs your support.

Bob Dalrymple

Bob has successfully undergone his hip operation and is making a good recovery. He expects to be released from hospital this weekend and is looking forward to returning home.
Bob will be unable to drive for six weeks and it will be twelve weeks before he can bowl again.

News update May 2012

The consensus at the last Council meeting was that we should keep the website going but to do that we need to keep it updated on any newsworthy items.
This depends on all the Association Members sending the Hon Secretary items of interest. It is this sort of information that is needed to make the Website worthwhile and interesting.
It is hoped in the summer to revert to naming the players who play in the matches. But to do this it is necessary to have your permission to put your name on the website.  If your name is on the Membership page then you have already given permission. If not and you would like your name to appear then please  email London Scots giving us your permission.

Forthcoming items will be a report on the Mini Internationals and a portfolio on the new Junior Vice President, John Cameron.

David Neilson is still negotiating prices for the tour and has settled on the Travel Lodge in Falkirk. There will be a further update after the Council meeting on the 14th May 2012

Unfortunately, the barbecue has been cancelled due to a neighbouring club being burnt down resulting in David Neilson's club offering  facilities until the problem is resolved. This means that the club will be in use every weekend and as a result we have had to cancel the event.

The President  v Vice President match will take place on Sunday 13th May. At the time of writing we have 18 nominations for the match.

There will be no Association competitions this year. It was decided to have a break for a couple of years then try to resurrect in a different format. Alistair McNicol will put forward proposals for 2013/14

Newsletter Spring 2012

HIGH DRAMA AT WATFORD GAP

The clock was ticking, the deadline was getting closer, a decision had been made, if he didn’t show by eight o’clock the showdown would have to be abandoned.  There was no other way. Tempers were rising, fingers were wagging, accusations were flying about, Marshall Jim Lumsden did his best to keep order but the Miserable Fifteen  were having none of it. Thankfully all weapons were safe behind the bar under the guard of long-haired Len. Everyone was on a knife-edge, the clock chimed eight, the saloon bat-wing door was flung back and there he was –  Big Bad John riding to save the day. He was late because the 7.10 from Charing Cross had been held up.  Yippee!! Stetsons were thrown into the air; the AGM for the London Scottish could go ahead! Yes gents, from being the  Miserable fifteen we became the Magnificent sixteen, and what a sixteen. The business was over before we knew it and that was  without our secretary who had been ambushed on the way in. Plaudits were given and received, new President sworn in,  old President magnanimous in his praise of all who had helped him to a successful year.

Tour of Ayr

What a year – the grand tour of Ayr was a great success due mainly to Bill’s backroom folk, brother Bob and the wives Sue and Derryn,  and thanks to the tourists who helped make this a really good tour.

Outdoor Mini International

Another highlight of the season was winning the outdoor mini international, full details are all on the website.

Past President Kennedy Brown Receives the Malaysian Service Medal

Past President Kennedy Brown was recently presented with the Malaysian Service Medal by a Malaysian General.
The Pingat Jasa Malaysia is a medal offered to Commonwealth forces who served Malaysia in its fight to preserve its newly  won independence against terror and aggression between 1957 and 1966 and it has been awarded to both servicemen and women and to civilians.
Kennedy was a Petty Officer on board the battle cruiser HMS Belfast which is now moored in the Thames near the Tower of London,  but was on active service in the far East during the Korean War and after extensive modernization between 1956 and 1959 returned to the area to keep the peace in Malaysia.
Congratulations and well done Kennedy.

we have played 11 games, won 7 and lost 4 with 1 game cancelled, shots for – 1208, and shots against – 1101. Bob, we hope the operation goes well.

  MATCH DAY ADMINISTRATION AND ORGANISATION

As there were no nominations for the position of Outdoor Match Secretary at the AGM, the Officers and council members have agreed to organise the 2012 outdoor fixture list  “Officers of the day” will be nominated for matches and they will basically perform the duties of the match secretary.  The following system will operate until we find somebody who is prepared to take on the role of Match Secretary: -  Match nominations should be returned at the earliest possible date. From the nominations teams will be selected and sent to members with details of nominated Officers of the Day.  The officer of the day will be responsible for administration on match days. They will collect match fees, arrange for the match cards to be completed and liaise with host clubs on catering requirements. If you are unable to attend a game for any particular reason you should contact the Officer of the day who will attempt to find a substitute. Contact details of nominated officers of the day will be given on the team selection sheet in advance of each match.

If there is anybody who is prepared to take on the job please contact Jim Lumsden.

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY

Council Update

The Council report that we still have a vacancy for a Match Secretary and two 2 Council members.

Until a Match Secretary is appointed, the outdoor matches in 2012 will be organised by an "Officer of the Day"

The "Officer of the Day" will be responsible for the administration of the day and ensuring that we have a full team for that particular game.

When the team lists are issued to players, the name of the "Officer of the Day" and his contact telephone number will be provided.
Should a player who has been selected to play be unavailable, he should telephone the "Officer of the Day" who will endeavour to find a replacement.

This year the match nominations will be returned to Jim Lumsden and he will pass on the list of nominations together with contact numbers for members
to the appointed "Officers of the Day" for each match.

Hopefully this system will work until we can persuade a suitable individual to take on the role of Match Secretary.

The Guinness Trophy 2011

Sunday 18th September saw the London Scottish bowlers on the top rink at Sutton ready with their staunch supporters to take on the first challenge of the day, the team photograph.
It was immediately obvious that one our members had a new set of teeth installed as all can testify looking at the numerous photos taken of him throughout the event.
At the team draw we were drawn against the English on the top rink and after 5 ends the overall score was 27 to Scots and 20 to the English it was a game of nip and tuck up to the 15th end where the English were winning on 5 rinks and the score 84 to the Scots and 82 to the English showed that the English were not going to lie down quietly.
At the 21st end the Scots had rallied and pulled ahead winning on 4 rinks drawing on 1 and losing on one.
With a final score of 123 to the Scots and 104 to the English,
The Scots were in the final.
After lunch we faced the Irish and expected a hard game from last year’s holders of the title.
After the niceties of saying hello to old and new adversaries on the green the game started with teams evenly matched.
After 5 ends the Scots were copying their morning’s endeavours and were slightly ahead overall.
After 10 ends we were up on 3 drawing on 1 with a score of 56 to both the Scots and the Irish.
At 15 ends the score was still tight just 3 shots separating the two teams.
The Scots rallied yet again and with their supporters applauding and cheering their side on the Scots upped their game and started to pull away from the Irish going from 3 winning rinks on the 15th end to 4 winning rinks by the 21st and a 24 shot lead overall and the winners of the 2011 Guinness Trophy.
Final score LSBA 129 London Irish 105. Well done the London Scottish.
The English won in the afternoon against the Welsh.

A word from the Honorary Treasurer

Keeping the Association books gets me involved in chasing members for their subscriptions. Having to ask members for money is probably the most difficult part of the job. Unfortunately, like many other Associations we are losing members faster than we can recruit them. This will undoubtedly cause major problems for us in the future unless each of us does something about it. We would double our membership at a stroke if every member recruited just one new member to the Association. There are thousands of Scots in London and the South East who play bowls. Let's find them and sign them up. My message to the membership is, if you are proud to wear the tie and badge of the London Scottish Bowling Association, be prepared to support it by getting more involved. We are always short of Council members. Take part in as many activities as you can, nominate for matches, enter competitions and pay your subs on time, saving wasted time, effort and cost to the Association.

If you don't the Association will slowly disappear before we reach our centenary in eight years time.

We have a long and very successful history as an Association. Let's make sure that we reach and celebrate our centenary.

It's up to you.

Information for the Tourists

For some reason there is confusion about the dress code for the Tour

The Honorary Secretary in his letter to the members clearly states that as from the start of the 2011/2012 indoor season the Association will adopt the Association Blue & White shirt as the preferred shirt for all games except that any member who does not have one or does not wish to wear one can continue to wear the white shirt and tie. It would continue to be a requirement to wear a white shirt and tie for the meal.

The dress code for the outdoor season which includes the tour is the status quo
Shirt and tie

Indoor Mini International Report

The Selection Committee made their minds up on the team selection from the players who nominated and had played the required 3 games minimum prior to the closing date which is 6 weeks before the Mini or the middle of February.
It is not an easy job as only 4 rinks are required with at least 4 reserves as stated in the letter sent out to the members
Of the original team published, we had to make a few changes as 2 of our skips had to pull out, which meant 2 reserves C.Stewart & R.Roberts were called in

Some of the rinks were changed and the team was as follows

Rink 1 Rink 2 Rink 3 Rink 4 Reserves

Lead R Christie K Brown W Dickie J Burns J Cameron
Two R Dalrymple R Dickie A McNicol Withheld E Finestone
Three C Stewart J Lumsden D Neilson R Alexander A Greenall
Skip Withheld R Smith D Miller A Bennet

In the morning game we were drawn against the London Welsh and as usual a very hard game ensued. No side giving an inch with all the usual ribbing that you get when these two sides meet and the usual vocal support.
Over the four rinks the London Scots won 3 and drew 1.

Result - London Scottish 105 shots London Welsh 50 shots

(31-11) (15-15) (31-10) (28-14)

In the afternoon game we made another substitution as R Dickie asked to be replaced. We brought in E Finestone to replace him. The afternoon final was against our Auld Enemy the dreaded London Irish, who beat the English in the morning game.
As usual it was very vocal and the banter was flying in all directions, some of it was very complimentary, and some of it cannot be put into print. It was a very hard fought game on all rinks but rinks 3 & 4 were up against two very strong rinks, and try as they might the other two rinks just could not make up the deficit. On paper we drew, winning 2 rinks and losing 2 rinks but the shot difference tells the true story.

Result - London Scottish 70 shots London Irish 90 shots

(23-15) (20-19) (14-28) (13-28)

We came Runners up losing by 20 shots. Hard Luck Lads, Good Try.
Congratulations to the London Irish. Keep the Trophy clean till we win it back next year.

The Selection Committee would like to thank all who took part and tried so hard to keep the trophy that we have won 4 times in the last 5 years, also our supporters who gave us all plenty of encouragement

The most succesful skip was on rink 1 whose team won both their games, then came R.Smith's rink who won one and drew one. A.Bennet & D.Miller both won one and lost one.

Bob Dalrymple Indoor Match Secretary

The Trials and Tribulations of a Match Secretary

Hello fellow members of the London Scottish Bowling Association.
My name is Bob Dickie and I have been the Outdoor Match Secretary of our Association for the last couple of years.
Over the course of the season we play around 22 friendly matches against some very good teams.
The venues for our matches are reasonably spread North and South of the Thames.
Our first game is the President v Vice Presidents at the Herts Bowls Club where it gives our members a chance to meet new friends and say hello to old friends.
If you want to play in that game just turn up. All that have nominated to play will play.
If your wife or lady friend is also a bowler she would be made welcome, we have rinks for the ladies too.
You might think the Match Secretary’s job would be an easy one.
It would certainly be a lot easier if more members applied for matches and late call offs for games could be kept to a minimum.
In a typical year. If for instance we have 157 members, of these 121 would be available to bowl but only 65 put in for games, leaving 56 members who will not play for the Association.
Our 2011 fixture list commits me to playing 508 bowlers over the season. The 65 who nominate for games play around 300 of that total.
This means I have to find 200 to cover our commitments to fulfil our fixtures.
How many phone calls does it take to get one place filled? Don’t ask. The other important factor is call offs. Last season we had 50.
The message I have for you is this.
Can all of you who have not put in for any games yet please try to put in for at least three games this season?
This will go a long way to help both myself and the Association.
We are all very conscious of the higher costs of travelling to and from the matches.
When these are added to the match fees it makes for an expensive day out. If you think I can help by putting you in the same match with another member in your area to share the cost of travel please let me know. The Association is well respected by County B. A., other Associations and clubs throughout 12 Counties.
This has all been achieved by its members, by their friendly but competitive attitude on the green and to a significant extent by our reliability in fulfilling fixtures with a full team on the day.
We are all proud to be members of our Association and enjoy the respect shown towards us but it needs your efforts to maintain that respect.
We need to fulfil our fixtures, try to avoid cancelling games and turn up with a full team. Last year we were close to winning the Guinness Trophy with the final result in doubt until the last wood had stopped moving. We have the team that can win it and I would ask your further support by putting your name down to play or turning up on the day to support your Association. A few friendly faces on the side lines supporting our team would make a big difference.
Long may the Association prosper and it can only do that with your further support.
Bob Dickie
Outdoor Match Secretary.

15th March 2011,

An update on the Association Competitions

To date for the Singles competition we have received 9 entries and for the Pairs competition 6 pairs.
For the competitions to take place we require a minimum of 16 entries for the Singles and 8 pairs for the Pairs.
If you are intending to to take part in either competition it would be helpful if you submitted your entries as soon as possible but remember, if you are successful, you must make yourself available for the Finals of both competitions to be held at Cove Outdoor Bowls Club on Saturday 10th September 2011 at 10.00hrs.
The last date for receipt of entries is the 31st May 2011.

A Message from the Association President

Dear Fellow Scots
I am honoured to have been elected your President for 2011.
I will do my very best to follow the high standards set by my predecessors.
I know I can rely on the help and support of all our Officers and Council Members in making this another successful season for the Association.
We have an attractive set of fixtures for both outdoor and indoor games. Our sincere thanks go to our two fixture Secretaries Bob Alexander & Kennedy Brown and Match Secretaries Bob Dalrymple & Bob Dickie for their continuing efforts on our behalf. Please try to help our match Secretaries by getting your nomination forms in as early as possible.
There are a number of important events during my year of office to which I would like to draw your attention.

President v Vice-President Game on Sunday 15th May To be played at Herts B C Watford starting at 3.00pm. All members who nominate will play and there will be rinks for the ladies. Do come and join us on what is always a most enjoyable day in good company. Any raffle prizes donated would be appreciated.

Tour to Ayr & District 2011 is a tour year and we will visit Ayr from 25 June – 1st July with our base at the the Ramada Hotel in Ayr.

Don’t forget to enter the Association competitions this year. A change of format to the Weir Cup triples is now a pair’s match which will be played at Chesham BC on Sunday 7th August and the Manson Cup singles on Saturday 30th July at New Malden BC. Both finals are to be played at Cove BC on Sunday 10th September.

Please let Bob Dickie have a bumper list of names for the Guinness Trophy this year. We have had no success in the outdoor competition since the year 2000 and it must be time for a change of fortune. This takes place on Sunday 18th September at Sutton BC.

My thanks to all the members that strive to make our Association work.

Good health and good bowling for the coming season.

Yours aye

Bill Dickie

Update on Association Competitions

After several years of being Competition Secretary Kennedy Brown has decided to stand down.
Thanks to Kennedy for all his efforts

His replacement is last year’s President Alistair McNicol.
Unfortunately insufficient entries were received to hold the Association outdoor competitions in 2010.

This year, with the backing of the Council, Alistair will be making a determined effort to have both competitions played.

To do this he will require the support of the membership.

The Manson Memorial Cup will once again be organised as a singles competition. A minimum of 16 entries has been stipulated by the Council
as being the number required to hold this competition.
The Weir Cup will revert to being a pairs competition. A minimum of 8 pairs has been stipulated by the Council as being the number of entries required to hold this competition.
Venues and dates of both competitions have yet to be finalised. It is hoped that the singles will be held at a venue in the south of the area in which we play matches and the pairs at a venue in the north of the area.

When these arrangements have been finalised members will be informed

The finals will be held at Cove Bowling Club, the home of Bill Dickie our current President, on Saturday 10th September 2011. It is essential that you keep this date clear in your diary if you intend to enter either competition.

So now it is over to you.
Get in touch with Alistair and let him know of your interest.

20th September 2010,

Edward Guinness 50th AnniversaryTrophy

The Mini-Internationals took place on Sunday 19th September 2010 at Sutton B. C.

In the morning the Scots drew the Welsh on the top green. During the game the Scots steadily drew away from the Welsh building up a lead at one point of 38 shots. The Welsh wittled away the lead to only 20 at the end.

In the final the Scots faced the Irish. The Scots started well building up a lead of 18 shots. For the next few ends it was nip and tuck until the Scots dropped 18 shots on four rinks. Again for the next few ends it was nip and tuck with the Irish gaining the upper hand. The Scots came back strongly until at the end there were only two rinks left playing their last end. The match was even overall. One of our rinks were 4 shots down with the 3 and skip of the rink to play but were not able to improve the outcome. Our last rink waited for the other rink to finish. Seeing no change of the score meant at that stage the Irish were 4 up over all. Our final rink was holding two shots and needed either another shot to draw or to remove an Irish bowl lying third out of the head and bring another Scottish bowl into play and counting and his to stay for four to draw the game. It did not happen despite a valiant effort by the skip who hit the offending wood out of the head but alas two of ours also for one shot. The Scots lost by 3 shots.

1st May 2010,

A Message from your President,

Dear Fellow Scots,

Thank you for electing me as your President for the year 2010. This is an honour and I will do my utmost to follow the high standards set by my predecessors.

This year will be challenging , however, I know that we have a membership of excellent bowlers well capable of winning the matches which have been arranged for us. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Match Secretary for his hard work in providing us with an excellent programme of matches. To date we have had a very successful Indoor Season. I hope this performance can be replicated outdoors. I am grateful for the tremendous support I have been given by everyone since becoming President.

There are a number of important events during my year of office which I would particularly like to bring to your attention and ask for your continued support in making them a success:-

President v Vice President Match on Sunday 16th May 2010 – Herts. BC.

Manson Cup Singles on Saturday 24th July 2010 – Herts. BC. (A minimum of 16 entries is required for this competition to go ahead).

Weir Cup Triples on Sunday 15th August 2010 – Herts. BC. (A minimum of 8 teams is required for this competition to go ahead). I would be delighted to see more entries in both of the above mentioned competitions.

LSBA Finals Day on Sunday 12th September 2010 - Camberley Bowling Club (my home club).

Guinness Trophy Mini International on Sunday 19th September 2010 - Sutton Bowling Club. This is a special year in that it is the Golden Jubilee of this prestigious event. I would like to see the strongest team possible representing the London Scots and ask that members make themselves available for selection by keeping the date clear in their diaries and by meeting the criteria for selection, which is to have played in a minimum of 3 matches for the London Scots during the 2010 Outdoor Season prior to the date the Selection Committee meets to select the pool of players. The Selection Committee will meet during the week commencing 2nd August 2010.

Annual Dinner Dance on Saturday 23rd October 2010 – Bounds Green Bowling Club. The 2009 Dinner Dance had to be cancelled due to a lack of support. I think it is a sign of the times that organisers of events of this type are finding it extremely difficult to run them. The Council has appointed a Social Sub- Committee to look into the feasibility of continuing with the Annual Dinner Dance or having some alternative social event to replace it.

2011 Tour to Scotland. I would like to take this opportunity of asking you to give The Senior Vice President, who will succeed me in 2011, your fullest support for the bi-annual bowls tour ‘back home’ to Ayr. The tour is scheduled to take place in June 2011. The Tour Organiser needs to have numbers finalised by 1st April 2010. I have been on the last two tours to Troon and Dumfries accompanied by my wife (a non-bowler) and we had a fantastic time on both tours. You cannot beat the hospitality ‘north of the border’ or the quality of the bowling greens.

I would also like to take this opportunity of asking you to pass on my thanks to the loyal band of guests ( you know who they are), who attend our matches to give us their support. Their presence at matches is greatly appreciated. My sincere thanks to all involved with the Association for their ongoing support. Good health and good bowling for the coming season.

Ayr tour 2011

The Ayr tour ably led by President Bill Dickie started at the Ramada hotel where the tourists met up for dinner and a general get together.
A Burns flavour was added by David McNeice and his pal.

Lugar

We were met at the gate by the President of Lugar BC. and the London Scottish were piped from the coach to the changing rooms then onto the green. Giving us a good start to the bowling week. The weather made threatening moves but the rain held off. The green although patchy bowled well and we finished on 15 ends.

Dalmellington

An evening game that was best finished before the wind dropped and the midges came out, again only 15 ends on a patchy but very fast green. The evening’s entertainment was just starting when it was time to catch the coach back to the hotel.

Forehill

The Ladies played their first game in the morning and won, this put the pressure on the men to win, but they were unable to follow suit and lost . The green looked good and bowled well. On my rink I knew I was in for a good night when our opposing skip not only looked like one of our past members but had the same outlook and sense of humour.

Seafield

Another evening game with our ladies in full support held at David McNeice’s club. The London Scots had another narrow win.

Kay Park

The men were up first in an afternoon game winning by a small margin. In the evening the ladies held up their end by also winning. The green played well and looked good. After an evening of being entertained by the comedy duo Two Jimmy’s and the solo artists in good voice it was time to catch the coach.
The tourists were clapped on to the coach by the members of Kay Park all aligned on the road outside the club house, which as it turned out was the last match against another team and a good end to the evening.

Troon

Due to bereavement Troon were unable to put out a team as most were at the funeral, however we were able to use their green and a spread was put on for us by Troon volunteers that had returned from the funeral to see to our needs.

Last night

After the dinner we were entertained by a local act Crooked Jack interspersed by dancing and our own superstars.

On a personal basis

President, Bill and Tour Organiser, Bob would like to thank all the tourists for making this tour a success. All were on time for the coach and acted as good Ambassadors on behalf of the London Scottish Bowling Assocciation.
They would also thank all the clubs visited for their hospitality and friendship shown to us, to congratulate them on their well maintained facilities and for all the good memories brought back with us.

Thank you

I am sure that all the Tourists, indeed all the members of the London Scottish Bowling Association would like me to thank Bill & Bob for all their hard work in organising the tour.

Both David & Diane are assisting me with hotel & coach bookings and if needed are willing to help finding clubs to accommodate us. Clubs booked so far are Lugar, Ayr Forehill & Ayr Seafield. Ayr Forehill will hold a lady’s game in the morning and a men’s game in the afternoon. I am still waiting for replies from Dundonald, Ayr & Ayr Hawkhill. I have others to write too if they are unable to accommodate us. I have written to 6 other clubs and have not been able to secure a venue; they are Annbank, Auchinleck, Cumnock, Dalrymple, Girvan, Kilmaurs & Cragie. I have contact details of the Auld Kirk for our church service on the Sunday morning and will book nearer the date. If any money is available for a coach tour out I will book one. Single rooms are charged at a premium rate of £15:00 per night. The appropriate number of double and twin rooms have been booked for our party. There are car parking facilities available. Matches will be arranged at six clubs. It is hoped to include three ladies rinks if there are sufficient men for 6 rinks.

I would like to have 4 to 6 more men bowlers on the tour to allow for people wanting a day off.

1st May 2010

The arrangements have been finalised for the Association's tour to Ayr from 25th June 2011 to 2nd July 2011. Accomodation has been provisionally reserved at the Ramada Jarvis Hotel. The hotel is located in Ayr town centre and has 20 double, 40 single and 40 twin en suite bedrooms. Single rooms are charged at a premium rate. The appropriate number of double and twin rooms have been booked for our party. There are car parking facilities available.
Matches will be arranged at six clubs. It is hoped to include two ladies rinks if there are sufficient men for 6 rinks.
The estimated cost is £390 per person. This includes seven nights bed & breakfast, dinner on arrival, end of tour dinner dance, the cost of travelling to matches, green fees and catering but does not include the cost of travelling from home to Ayr and back. The Council regrets the increasing cost of the tour but this is due to the inevitable result of inflation, rising costs and hotel charges.

If you would like more information about the tour please email London Scots or telephone on 07850 526854.

It is hoped that the Association will support the President elect and make this another successful tour to Scotland.
