"Composition" is an intaglio; a color aquatint, done in 1958. This impression is pencil signed, dated, and editioned "59/75" by the artist in the lower margin. The platemark measures 16-3/4 x 22 inches. This color aquatint was printed by the artist on a sheet of ivory wove BFK Rives paper that measures 19-3/4 x 25-5/8 inches. A reference for this image is MoMA #635.1959; illustrated in MoMA's 2006 exhibition catalog "Eye on Europe", page 16, figure 1. The gallery inventory number is 21174.

This untitled "composition" is an excellent example of Sonderborg's Tachist work. Influenced by both the experimental prints being done at Atelier 17 in Paris and his exposure to the "Action Painting" of the New York Abstract Expressionists Sonderborg creates a swirling, gestural image in aquatint. He tempers the calligraphic black with some color, blue and red-orange, which adds an even more explosive element to the composition.
An impression of this aquatint is in the Museum of Modern Art, New York collection and was used in an exhibition in 2006, titled "Eye on Europe" and is illustrated in color on page 16, figure 1.
