After a period of anticipation, I am thrilled to share that I have been awarded a First Class Honours Degree in Law from Durham University. Reflecting on my time at Durham, the journey has been uniquely transformative. While the pandemic presented challenges in my first year, my second year brought a unique privilege – the opportunity to take part in the U20s Six Nations Championship with Scotland. Navigating the balance between this commitment and my academic pursuits was no small feat; it demanded that the majority of my second university term be spent training in Edinburgh, away from the campus. Despite this, I hold a deep sense of pride, not only for participating wholeheartedly but also for upholding the academic standards that ultimately led to my degree classification. In my final year I dedicated myself unreservedly towards my studies. My dissertation, titled 'The OECD Pillar Two: A Shift Towards Tax Imperialism,' delved into the expansions of the OECD's anti-BEPS efforts, revealing a transformation into a manifestation of international tax imperialism. By scrutinizing the ramifications of Pillar Two on non-OECD nations, particularly those in development, I uncovered potential encroachments on sovereignty, stifling of competition, and overburdening of administrative capacities. This pursuit has further fueled my passion for comprehending global dynamics and their far-reaching consequences. As I look to the future, these experiences have paved the way for my next step—an MSc in Defence, Development and Diplomacy at Durham University. In a world grappling with intricate global challenges, this field takes on paramount significance. Through this pursuit, I look forward to combining my passion for understanding global dynamics with the practical skills needed to drive meaningful change.

After 2 years, today we had the last class of our MA in European Studies at FH Burgenland 2 exams to go and I can fully concentrate on the thesis. I had the chance of having very good professors and very good colleagues. This MA is the ideal connection with the BA in International Law I obtained 20 years ago. I want to thank the Programme Director Gerda Füricht-Fiegl for accepting me in her MA. 2 years ago I thought "I am 48 years old, maybe it's too late" and no, she said "it's never late", so I am here. How do I feel? I have to admit that it has not been easy to have a life in which things were not falling into place with the right timing and it was not easy to explain why to those that had it all on the "right" moments. But I never gave up and luckily I could find great people on the way. Those that pretended that life must have a specific rhythm have gone their own way. My four lessons learnt are: - keep on learning intellectual subjects. Our brain needs to learn how to think and how to develop thoughts. - never give up. It's not easy, you maybe have to adjust your trajectory, but your goal is you. - go your own way, defending yourself, but never hurt back. It is not necessary. - forget your ego and embrace self-awareness. The first leads to disrespect, the second to respect. #study #goals #university #europeanunion #eu

We were privileged to continue our support for SOUL | Society of University Lawyers by sponsoring the 2023 SOUL Conference, where our Education experts had the opportunity to share their insights on the Australian Universities Accord Interim Report during a panel session attended by over 100 university lawyers.    Education Industry Lead Kylie Diwell led the discussion as the panel chair, accompanied by Tom Fletcher, Harriet Eager and Michael J. Wells from Wells Advisory (which is now part of our Education Consulting practice). The panel discussed key recommendations in the Universities Accord Interim Report, the progress made towards their implementation and potential legal implications for universities. Furthermore, they projected forward to anticipate the possible recommendations in the Final Report, which is set to be released in December 2023. Key themes discussed include enhancing higher education accessibility, redefining university governance, prioritising student well-being, reimagining research funding, and the shift in the role of international education. At our 2023 Ramsay Postgraduate Orientation, 2021 Ramsay Postgraduate Scholar James Rigby addressed the new cohort, describing his experience of postgraduate study at Oxford, the joys and challenges of scholarly life and how 'little acts of scholarship' can add to the modern world. Discussing the deepening and sharing and understanding of our civilization, James said that it's crucial that 'the fundamental ideas that have cultivated our society, basic moral rights, the scientific method, the rule of law, are not scraped clean from the public's minds and written over by merely passing concerns.' [LEARNING FROM THE ORIENT] “As the associate dean for international partnerships of Jindal Global Law School (JGLS), I met with a delegation from Greece last month and learned that graduate degrees from the country’s top universities are available at a fraction of the cost, sometimes for as little as 1,000 euros per academic year. I ask: Why drain our coffers for Kool-Aid when the Pierian spring comes at a fraction of the cost? I have seen for myself that the quality of education is neither confined to nor defined by the Ivy League. Indeed, as any honest graduate of these universities would admit, what difference these Tier-1 institutions lend to our records is not necessarily education but prestige. But in terms of the quality of education we receive, well suffice it to say that, with the oversupply of doctorates and expertise, products of these very “top-tier” universities are now teaching around the globe. Outside of the US and the United Kingdom, and in institutions which, though unranked, are specialists in their fields. But that eastward trend should not end in Europe. We must also look to Asia. I chose to teach in the global south precisely to break away from Western-centric cycles. JGLS ranks 84th in the QS World University Rankings, while the University of the Philippines College of Law ranks among the top 300-350 in the world. Their impressive performances reflect a broader shift toward an education where members of the “third world” are not merely beneficiaries but significant contributors to global discourse. I was glad to host the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) acknowledgement meeting with representatives of Universidad de Los Andes, Chile, Pablo Manterola and Maria Ignacia Vial Undurraga. The University of Houston Institute for Global Engagements, Executive Director, Michael Pelletier, Law Center Dean Leonard Baynes and Global and Graduate Programs, Director, Maria Sanchez Carbajo also participated to formally acknowledge this important collaboration.
