West of Lightning Ridge there is a property, under the custodianship of the Pye family and Jane Pye is the most extraordinary woman who has dedicated herself to mapping and understanding the landscape of their property and the Aboriginal people who once inhabited it. She has walked alongside local people like Alan Tighe and Rhonda Ashby listening and learning and coming to understanding. She has mapped thousands of culturally modified trees and what she describes as 'trees in trees' which, up to now, academia had discredited human involvement in... such is the denial still of the role Aboriginal people played in landscape management. But through Jane's tenacity and persistence in getting the information she's been mapping to researchers and academics... there's a new paper that now claims: "Their association with Culturally Modified Trees and the relatively low density of epiphytes elsewhere suggest that Aboriginal people have played a direct role in creating this landscape, to which they remain deeply connected." I've been thinking a lot recently about what it takes to lead and activate change and the dedication, commitment and determination in the face of adversity that's required. A conversation yesterday with a friend and colleague who had been told to pull her head in on a matter of activating regional diversity means she's upsetting the apple cart and people don't like it - I told her, good... you are making progress - keep going! Even when they tell you no.... if it's in your bones to tell another way, keep going! https://lnkd.in/gmNgXCaY
