One decision that changed the face of my life and helped me study in the UK Transition from Telugu Medium to English Medium I studied in a Telugu medium school where English was one among the seven subjects, and it was taught in Telugu (Lol) . It was very hard to decide after my schooling , I wasn’t even able to understand English, One of my seniors told me that If I want to stand out from the crowd, I should make this decision. Finally, after engaging in a lot of thinking, I made the decision. but Luckily, no lecturers at my Junior College (+2 ) used to teach in English. They used to translate everything, and It helped me get used to words, grammar, sentences etc.. I used to have the fear of failing in public exam. So I spent more hours studying. That fear helped me get 94.6% in my +2 Public exams (Lol) Then , I started focusing more on Language, Understanding and Writing , during my bachelor’s. I even used to try giving inputs to the professor in the class(all of them were absolute disasters, used to take them ages to get what I was trying to say 😂) Slowly started reading books, watching documentaries, YouTube, podcasts, engaging in conversations with my fellow volunteers at NGO’s I kept on making mistakes, and even started a process of trial and error by posting on my IG page “Psyche_zone1” I realized, If i want to Understand English; I should listen If I want to speak English; I should speak If I want to Master writing ; I should write There is no secret mantra, there is no shortcut, there is no hack The only way is process, practice, making mistakes, and getting better day by day . Why am I sharing this story? Because the struggle is real, alot of students make this transition and think that they can’t compete, and lose confidence. Some of you may have studied in hindi/Tamil/telugu or Urdu mediums . It no more makes sense, it will not stop you from doing things you love doing. It used to be my excuse, but no more And Yes, I make mistakes, I stutter, I struggle But I will never stop learning, and I know it will help me become fluent in my expression!

Generally speaking, if you are reading to achieve English language proficiency, go against popular advice. Some English language teachers say that one should read a lot on regular basis. Contrary to this, I suggest that you may read 500 words daily (or with a gap of one or two days) but do so with observation. While you are reading a text, pay attention to how vocabulary is used, punctuation marks put, sentences structured and other language aspects utilized to communicate intended meaning. Reading accompanied by thorough observation is a surefire way to develop one’s speaking and writing skills. Reading is as important for professionals as it is for students.

It’s fascinating to me how different languages handle communication so differently! We all speak, but the variety of sounds used (and not used) is extraordinary! Some languages pace their speech evenly. Others, like English, stress some words much more than others. Then there are all kinds of grammar rules-- and various forms of writing. Chinese grammar doesn’t seem so difficult to me, but learning tones and traditional writing seems overwhelming. I love the simplicity of the Korean alphabet, but learning the different forms of address for people in different positions looks tough. This is my face when I see other companies only hiring native speakers. Yesterday I announced that the Canguro Academy is looking for teachers, and in less than 24 hours I had to close submissions, because we had so many applications. I know this is a good problem to have. But the best part is that there were teachers applying from all over the world. In fact, only one of them was a native speaker. I know that each one of these teachers would bring different perspectives, teaching styles, cultures, humanity, and variety into the Academy. And my students would LOVE IT. Why would you NOT want that in business? If you're worried about language skills: you shouldn't. Lots of the applicants had better English than most monolinguals. If you're worried about students rejecting them: you shouldn't. Out of the more than 1000 students who have joined the Academy, only 1 of them has left because they didn't like the idea of non-native teachers (good riddance). In 2024 any company that hasn't woken up to the reality of English as a global language deserves to go out of business, and students should vote with their money. Students: please stop giving your money to people who sell the toxic ideology that monolingual English speakers OWN the English language. They don't: Language is a democracy and it belongs to the people.❤️
