The June 2023 issue of Community Playmaker features a piece by Tyler Williams called "Fort Collins, CO: A Case Study in Equitably Expanding Public Transit," highlighting the critical importance of inclusive and equitable transportation systems. As a contributor, Fund for Our Economic Future president, Bethia Burke, addresses the transportation paradox of "no car, no job; no job, no car" and its effect on so many communities—particularly communities of color.
The Fund's initiative, The Paradox Prize, has worked to solve for this and other widespread job access inequities across Northeast Ohio. "Since The Paradox Prize launched, we’ve seen more employers and civic leaders recognizing the issue of worker mobility and exploring ways to improve it," Burke says. "The Fund and our partners have put almost $1 million into testing worker mobility innovations—and this investment has produced permanent improvements to transportation across Northeast Ohio. Four solutions have become lasting fixtures for connecting more people to transportation, and ultimately work, through new public transit models and routes, improved employer transportation benefits and car shares."
