A new, £1.8 million sports hall that will be open to the public is taking shape at a Leicestershire school. The hall, at Welland Park Academy, in Market Harborough, is nearing completion, and is part of wider developments at the school.

The hall will be made up of four badminton courts, and will be used for a variety of other sports, such as football and netball. Representatives from the school and the project had been financed using savings, and contributions from developers building local homes.

Julie McBrearty, school principal, said: 'We have been saving hard to realise this project, which has been delayed, understandably, by the repercussions of the pandemic." Other changes include replacement of the existing all-weather pitch, and a later date, a new canteen.

Jason Button, head of PE at the academy, said: "We are excited to add a new, top spec sports hall to use alongside our existing facilities of an all-weather pitch, gym and the existing sports hall. We already offer a wide range of sports clubs, fixtures, and opportunities and this will enable us to develop more minority sports. We have loved watching the new build sports hall develop and are excited to see these final stages of kitting it out with a host of equipment."

Councillor Simon Whelband, Harborough District Council’s cabinet member for health and wellbeing, told LeicestershireLive : “I am delighted that young people and the wider community will soon start to benefit from the brand-new sports facilities at Welland Park Academy and the state of the art facilities will enable more residents in the Harborough district to live healthy, active lives.”
