Canterbury returned to winning ways in National 2 South with a 29-12 win over Hinckley on Saturday.

The performance was patchy but the quality of the tries rescued the match as a spectacle and the four scored by the city club banked them a bonus point.

A Tom Best penalty put them ahead after 20 minutes before Hinckley replied with a fine catch-and-drive try from a line out. That stirred the home side into action and tries from Gert De Kock and Mike Melford put them in control.

With two conversions from Best, the city club were suddenly 17-5 ahead and it got even better as they started the second half with the outstanding try of the afternoon scored again by Melford.

The fourth try, converted again by Best, came from Ben Massey but after that their game dipped and suspect handling frustrated them.

The visitors could make little use of it against a tight defence until late on when they went over for their second try.
