A GAA club in Co Tyrone has been forced to cancel its activities until the weekend after its club rooms were burgled.

St Enda's GAC, in Omagh, was ransacked between 9pm on Monday evening and 8am on Tuesday morning.

Club secretary Conor Sally told The Irish News that members were still assessing the extent of the damage at the rooms at Healy Park, which is also the home of the Tyrone senior county teams.

Mr Sally said: "At this time we are still not sure what has been stolen. There was a sum of money taken and there are spirits which have been stolen from the bar.

"We had a presentation night at the weekend, and we had takings from the tickets, the bar and the restaurant."

Mr Sally said he believes drilling equipment was used to dislodge safes from the wall, while a smoke alarm and fire extinguisher were also removed and damaged.

"They took safes, two of which were bolted to the wall. This wasn't a five minute job.

"The property has been broken into a number of times. We don't take security lightly. They had to break through two security doors to get in here."

The club is hopeful of being up and running again by the weekend, when it is due to host courses and sessions on Saturday and a National League double header featuring Tyrone's footballers and hurlers on Sunday.

Mr Sally said: "There are a group of volunteers coming here to clear up the club. We have a ladies football course and a children's session scheduled here for Saturday morning and we hope to be up and running then.

"The initial shock and anger has been transformed into the usual sense of GAA community and family. There are people from other clubs ringing to offer assistance and support."

On its Facebook page, St Enda's wrote: "A considerable amount of damage was caused to our property which unfortunately means that all indoor activities for our youth players has to be cancelled until further notice. This Thursday evening’s community bingo event will also be cancelled.

"We apologise to our club members and especially all our children whose weekly activities have had to be cancelled."
