There was triple success for Manx Gymnastics Centre of Excellence at the North West Open Gymnastics Competition in Wigan last weekend.

Reine Temporaza, Maya Kewley and Grace Roberts brought home a raft of all-around and individual apparatus medals between them.

The competition, which saw 30 of the region’s clubs competing over the course of the weekend, was held at the Robin Park Sports Complex in front of a packed audience.

It was birthday honours for Reine as she produced a top-quality set of routines to claim the all-around Senior Level 3 title.

Starting with a stunning beam routine, which saw her receive a gold medal and one of the highest beam scores of the whole weekend, it looked unlikely that anyone would catch her for the all-around contest.

She maintained the lead throughout the competition, picking up a silver bars medal and a bronze floor medal on the way to being crowned the all-around champion at this level.

In the same competition, Maya got off to a solid start with a top-10 ranked beam routine. She then executed a powerful vault which won her a bronze medal on this apparatus as well as showing a high level of artistry on the floor where she also secured a top-10 ranking. She finished the competition with an exceptional bars routine which saw her take the apparatus title, leaving in her in second place in the all-around standings behind Reine.

In the Senior Level 4 competition, Grace remained focused in what was the biggest group of the weekend, with 45 gymnasts competing for the title over two rounds of competition.

A fantastic start on beam saw Grace retain the top spot on this apparatus right through until the final of eight rotations where she was knocked down into the bronze medal position.

An impressive bars routine led to her claiming the bronze medal on this apparatus and a strong floor performance along with a fifth place vault was enough to secure her the silver medal overall in the all-around competition.

Also competing for the club at the event were Sophia Reid, Aine Matthews, Ella Darnill, Isla Gray, Zara Stott and Millie Blackall.

For some of these gymnasts it was their first off-island competition and there were some impressive individual performances from each of them, with many of them trying out new moves and routines.

Special mention should go to Sophia for her sixth place beam routine in the Senior Level 4 competition and to Millie for ranking eight on bars at Junior Level 4.

In addition, representing the club off-island for the first time as officials rather than gymnasts were newly-qualified judges Becky Bellhouse and Kelsie Gibbs who had plenty of opportunity to put their freshly-acquired skills into practice.

All big thank you must go to all of the coaching team at MGCE for their hard work getting the girls ready for the competition. Also to Simon Scanlan, Nick Workman, Margaret Burns and Erica Bellhouse for accompanying the team over the weekend.
