Primary School age children took part in the Rising Stars Badminton Tournament for the Tedda Cain Cups during the half-term holiday.

Numbers were down this year with some children in Covid isolation and many parents taking the first opportunity to arrange off-island holidays for a while.

For some of the children it was their first taste of competitive badminton and it was nice to see everyone giving their all in the games. It is likely that these names will be cropping up in future tournaments.

Winner of the Year 3 girls’ event was Connie Creer (Fencibles), Year 4 winner Grace Birchall (Fencibles), Year 5 winner Sophie Clague (Fencibles) and Year 6 winner Kelly Cheung (St Ninian’s) , who also won the Tedda Cain Cup.

The Year 3 boys winner was Elliot Dowd-Williams, Year 4 boys Jasper Corlett (St Ninian’s), Year 5 boys Harry Quayle (St Ninian’s), while Advaith Malikireddy (Falcons) won Year 6 boys and the Tedda Cain Cup.

The children were then matched up for doubles, which also included some of the junior helpers. Boys’ section winners were Lok Yuen Cheung and Charlie Kneale, runners-up the aforementioned Advaith and Elliot.

Winners of the girls doubles were Ameya Malikireddy and Charlotte Quayle, runners-up were Sophie and Connie.

All children received medals at the end of the tournament. Trophies were presented to the year winners by Roberta Cannell, chair person Isle of Man Badminton Association on behalf of Tedda Cain’s daughter Tracy Kelly. Mr Cain was a keen supporter and coach of junior players.

Thank you to everyone that helped on the day.

l The next junior tournaments will be the under-15s and under-19s events on January 22, from 2-8pm at the National Sports Centre.
