PITCH PERFECT: Winners of the Bill Linnett trophy David Greenwood (skip), Sylvia Hennem and Zandra Westlake with runners up Derek Willett (skip), Keith Tucker and John Brotherton.

Members of an Essex bowling club played to win at their recent annual finals weekend.

On September 3 and 4, players from the Danbury Bowling Club turned out in earnest to show off their skills on the green.

The weekend event saw their best bowlers use every available gambit to outwit and outplay their opponents, blocking bowls and dislodging shots nearest to the jack to be crowned victorious.

The village bowls club held an open day in May to attract fresh talent to the game and were delighted when a total of 19 new players signed up to join them at the green on the Lower Field in Mayes Lane.

All the players who attended over the weekend were resplendent in white trousers and shorts, and proudly donned their uniform club shirts in the familiar colours of blue and gold.

Over the weekend, the Men’s Singles Title was won by Steve Gunster, while the Ladies Singles title went to Liz Pretty.

Other winners included Steve Gunster for the President's Cup and Richard Green who took the Novice Singles.

For the doubles games, D Coggins and D Greenwood bagged the Two Wood Pairs (Cleveland Cup), and M Willett and D Willett took home the Three Wood Pairs (Cricketers Cup).

The finals weekend was held on the club's county standard bowling green. and with the clubhouse close by, the players were keen to celebrate their wins.

First founded in 1932, the club offers a range of bowling opportunities, including club afternoons on Monday and Wednesday, with social events and friendly games taking place throughout the season.

Players from the Danbury Bowling Club are often entered into the Central Midweek league, the Chelmsford & District league and the Chelmer Ladies Triples league. Intra Club competitions, for players of all levels, are also held each year with a presentation lunch at the end of the season, and a club tour takes place every other year.
