Stick with it.
Sleepin_Dragon12 February 2024
After helping save a baby from dangerous flood waters, Jo finds the dead body of a man in a lift, unable to discover his identity, she illegally puts his DNA into an online search facility, the man's sister arrives in The UK wanting answers.

I'm really surprised by the negative reviews, and had I quit at episode one, I may have also given up, but I decided to stick with it, and I'm glad it did, as it develops, it gets better and better, it angles along, but the last couple of episodes are very good.

Very much a suspense thriller, Whodunnit, it didn't play out as I was expecting, from the advertising, it was made to look as if the big flood would be the climax, it's more the fallout, very much after the flood.

It's a clever storyline, at a time where flooding in The UK has become a real issue, you can only imagine how bad it must be to get caught up in one, visually that first episode looked great, the scenes of a flooded village looked terrific.

No issues with the acting, Sophie Rundle, Philip Glenister and Matt Stokoe are all excellent, I thought Lorraine Ashbourne really stood out.

Don't be too quick to believe the low reviews, it's well worth watching.

7/10.

It is not rubbish but it requires a second season for sure
itriatay99519 February 2024
After the Flood is a good TV serie in which each character has some skeletons in the closet. As a matter of fact, each episode we learn some new secrets of each character. Sophie Rundle is a really good actress and her character in this series is a younger version of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple. On the other hand, there are important topics such as environmental management, corruption, and urbanization that this series focus on. As a matter of fact, I advise everyone to watch this serie IF they will release the second season of it because the story was left incomplete and it requires a second season. In short, I give 7 out of 10 to this serie and I hope that there will be a second season coming soon.

A good tale
daveditch-5329116 January 2024
Strange one . The police process , stereotyping of certain characters and the handling of or response to the flooding in ep 1 werent the best and almost suggest it wouldn't be worth watching, although some parts were spot on which kept the attention . A real mix .

As it develops those police glitches remain which does detract , same shift always at work which probably explains why they're so wooden , but the story certainly develops .

The Jo character is a little implausible , doing her own thing and the habit of giving a synopsis to anyone who will listen just in case you're not following becomes a bit irritating but maybe useful for some .

However the story overall is a great one with a few twists as it unravels in front of you . I had no idea who the meanest bad guy was going to turn out to be and he is sinister . (No spoilers )

Worth watching.

Floody Good
Lejink3 February 2024
I must admit I didn't have very high hopes for this latest 6-part cop-drama from ITV but I found the longer it went the better it got. It starts with a massive flood in a fictitious Yorkshire town. Very pregnant policewoman Joanna Marshall, played by Sarah Rundle, is keen to become a detective, but meanwhile has quite the day while out in unform, first of all helping to save a young baby who's fallen into the fast-flowing floodwater, although she's greatly helped in this by a mystery man who unflinchingly dives headlong into the torrent. She then later stumbles upon a dead man in a car-park lift who it soon becomes obvious wasn't a victim of the flood but was murdered beforehand and placed there to make it look like he was.

Jo's dad was in CID and she's now married to Pat, already a qualified detective so detection is in her blood and so it proves as she Miss Marples her way onto the trail of the dead man which soon spirals outwards to take in two faked suicides, political and police corruption, smuggling, environmental abuse and much more besides.

To get to the bottom of all this she's thrown together with the attitudinal younger sister of the dead man, who rushes over from France to uncover the truth about her brother's death, while also having to contend with the in-laws from hell who her husband takes into their marital home after the flood makes them temporarily homeless.

I was impressed by the recreation of the flood itself in the neighbourhood and especially the baby-rescue at the beginning, but my interest was sustained afterwards in an extensively plotted narrative with many twists and turns along the way leading to an enigmatically engineered ending.

Rundle trundles (sorry, couldn't resist it) her way effectively through the morass of red herrings strewn her way and does a good job of carrying the story along as the lead. She gets excellent support from good, solid actors like Philip Glenister, Lorraine Ashbourne, Nicholas Gleaves and Jonas Armstrong who I fondly remember as an earlier incarnation of Robin Hood some years ago.

With a healthy dose of earthy humour thrown in for good measure and a surprising twist-reveal in the climactic episode, this was an above-average police procedural and in my book was certainly better than the much-hyped recent series of "Happy Valley".

... splitting hairs... still better than lots out there
bjarias22 February 2024
... recently appearing is several very popular series, Peaky Binders, The Diplomat, Gentleman Jack, et al, Sophie Rundel once again is heavily involved leading in the success of this cop-show-drama... yes, you must get past her character being many months pregnant, and yet still very active in dangerous police investigative operations

... that aside, it's got a pretty decent plot-storyline, good-solid acting, with higher than average production values... winding up after six episodes with credible storyline threads heading towards another season series

... reading many of the bad reviews, they are not entirely incorrect.. this is not a perfect story by any means, yet it is entertaining programming, believed to be worthwhile viewing for this, and for the next series should it come about.

Watchable but not great
cathyannemoore-6619619 January 2024
I thought the first episode was very promising as the flood scenes were very realistic indicating it might be a drama series that had cost a lot to make and so would be very good. I also like Philip Glenister and Lorraine Ashworth as actors. The first episode and these two actors account for my 4 star rating. Thereafter the series becomes a typical ITV drama, promising start to reel viewers in leading to a damp squib of an ending. It's also quite obvious that many police dramas are written these days with a female officer/detective showing her male colleagues up to be incompetent. That formula is wearing a bit thin. I can't comment too much on the plot (other than as many holes as a culender.) without giving away spoilers. Overall watchable but do not expect Happy Valley.

Give it a watch, ignore the terrible reviews.
markwalsh-617077 February 2024
What the heck is with all the reviews absolutely slating this show ? Are people's attention spans or expectations just out of whack these days ?

I say give it a try, and switch off if it's not your cup of tea.

This was recommended to me by my Scottish neighbour. We both watch plenty of series and movies. OK maybe it's not super duper top notch drama or mystery, but it's entertainment. That's it, entertainment, it's not here to change your life or guide you to a higher plane.

Oh we live in Australia by the way, and so seeing the countryside, the towns and the 'people' is always a nice thing to us ex pats. It does get one homesick at times that's for sure.

In this series things certainly take a sharp upturn in episode 5, woooooh.

Somebody here stated that the bad guys are telegraphed, well OK there's only a handful of characters and well, someone there has to be involved, I mean that's how stories work right.

The way certain people are involved is what makes this turn out great, no spoilers intended, but it's not black and white.

I watched it over 2 days and it filled in some time, y'know like entertainment is made for.

OK, give it a go I say, and enjoy that cup of tea, cheers.

Oh Dear, dreadful
billstickers11 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I managed to cling on through the first episode of nonsense. As usual, unbelievable characters with cliche script. So we are to believe a trainee detective would risk terminating her embryonic career by breeching data protection laws amongst other crimes.

I just can't bring myself to watch anymore.

An 'on-line' DNA resource where one can upload one's personal DNA profile? And then that company puts a person in touch without a buy-your leave.

Garbage, garbage and more garbage. Unfortunately this is yet again a badly researched story with a lack of any credible behaviours. Did I say it was garbage - oh yeh, it is.

Stick With It
iansowerby24 January 2024
I wonder whether some of the negative reviews are from viewers who did not stick with it long enough. I did and found, after a slow start, it got me hooked. Excellent acting and production. Plenty of twists in the tale. Left you looking forward to finding out how everybody survived the ending. Special mention to Sophie Rundle who held it all together.

I would guess it suffered from reviewers expecting it to be as good as Happy Valley. Touted as being produced by the same people fed into this expectation. Best to see it as a fine drama in its own right. I look forward to the next series. Don't be put off..

Had potential but didn't deliver
jaxthiss15 January 2024
Utter rubbish, don't waste your time. Wooden acting apart from Lorraine Ashbourne and Philip Glenister who i'm surprised associated themselves with such a ridiculous unbelievable story line.

Would have been better to concentrate on corruption in local government and a focus on the impact of the actual flood on the local community which was of course in the title!

It's so annoying when there is ALWAYS a parking space and the cars are ALWAYS shiny and clean as if just out of the showroom!

The scenes of the flood itself were good and there were some nail biting moments but it deteriorated after that Location was pleasing but Happy Valley it ain't.

Washout
clairelevoi12 January 2024
I do like a good mystery but this was ridiculous. This story is so far fetched it's laughable. If this is policing then god help us. I got to episode 3 and that was enough to not waste a second of my life on this drivel. I was looking forward to this as it had high expectations but I was disappointed. Too many ridiculous twists and turns and the hammering home of how rubbish the environment agency are was eye rolling . Plot was about as tick as a blue stripe cuppa soup and that's a compliment. Not a drama I would recommend if you are looking for entertainment. A complete and utter washout in my opinion.

THIS GETS BETTER AND BETTER!
tvobsessed112 January 2024
After the flood is exactly when the real story starts. It's a detective drama mixed with a strong message for local communities. The character arcs develop more and more and the acting is brilliant Particularly between Sophie R and her real life/on screen husband. I watched the entire series and every episode ends with a cliffhanger. It is exciting but not with unbelievable and unrealistic storylines. I saw that some people had posted that certain things couldn't happen in their reviews and no spoilers but actually that's incorrect. So good to see full characters. I really hope there is a second series. Keep watching it gets so exciting.

More like an Emmerdale Xmas special than a serious drama
JRB-NorthernSoul10 January 2024
For me it was a turkey. Had a very clunky opening sequence that was laughable rather than dramatic, not helped by a paint by numbers techno soundtrack.

I was hoping for a disaster thriller with some eco themes but this had no ambitions beyond a plain old murder mystery. Direction particularly of the opening flood scenes was poor and unconvincing, they didn't seem to have any budget at all for extras.

The script was very poor on all levels, clunky dialogue, heavy exposition, an unbelievable world, everyone says exactly what they think etc., etc.

No interest in watching more, let alone 5 episodes. A real turkey, avoid if you don't want indigestion.

Brilliant keep watching
trickeytree11 January 2024
Just what we needed in the New Year. The twists and turns of this ITVX drama and so apt with the floods that many if us have witnessed over the last week or so.

So many top characters that you quickly get invested in and as for Sophie Rundle, just awesome. She doesn't take no for an answer and what a change. So what if she's pregnant, that won't stop her trying to solve the murder.

Only negative, the baby in the opening scenes, just not quite Hollywood, a bit rubbery, but still excellent excitement from the start and not bad for an ITVx drama. I wonder if we'll ever find out what happened at the end.

Utter rubbish
wpnrypxc12 January 2024
Don't waste your time watching this. Had high expectations due to great cast members but I reckon they made this just for the money. Happy Valley it is not !!

If the police really acted in this way heaven help us.

From the beginning when the rookie detective breaks the law to the end when they all seem to it beggars belief.

Also there was no sign of a flooded river in any ariel shot ? Surely the location could have looked like it might flood ! The climate change band wagon was in full flow ( about the only thing that was) which was very irritating. A tighter script and less episodes might have saved it but I doubt it somehow... disappointing.

Clickbait soap
Kalamoren12 January 2024
"From The Producers of Happy Valley"

This above is the only reason I pressed 'play' and I've regretted it pretty much instantly. Happy Valley was gritty, captivating well executed and more. After The Flood feels more like a typical melodramatic soap.

I'll be honest, I stopped watching right at the beginning, during the Moses scene (you'll know which one I mean) but it's all I could endure...

Extremely poor, not sure exactly who is involved from Happy Valley but it's definitely not on the same level.

The flood theme was however a pretty good timing considering whats happening in the UK right now.

Ignore the low score/ review. Produced/ Directed by Happy Valley. It's Brilliant!!!
chloegalley22 January 2024
After the flood( Tv Series) is a 2024 mystery thriller containing 6 episodes.

It stars Sophie Rundle as PC Joanne Marshall, a police officer investigating the death of an unidentified man after a natural disaster struck.

OMG this is so good produced and directed from the makers of Happy Valley and the story is kind of like the line of duty. Ignore the low rating and negative reviews it's so good.

The story telling is superb if you watch the first episode and think, this not that good you have to persevere with it as the program does get better as it goes on. Give it time!

Acting is great from all the cast. Each actor/ actresses plays the characters extremely well and makes the characters they play very believable.

This is what you call brilliant acting not like Fool Me Once with Michelle Keenan who is just so wooden.

After the Flood is a suspense thriller and with plenty of twist and turns throughout you would not want it to end. If anything you will be hooked I certainly was and so did my friends and family.

After watching Fool me once with Michelle Keegan in then to After the flood you can certainly tell which the better program is.

After the flood is so much better well the acting certainly is and so much more believable .

It's definitely worth the watch !

Don't why the low rating and the negative reviews but people don't know what good television is.

This is one to watch at the minute and if I'm being completely honest it's so much better than Fool me once.

So if you like suspense and mystery and like thrillers like Happy Valley, Line of Duty and Vigil then you will love this.

Just to goes to show they don't get it right with the ratings/ reviews. It's just best to watch it for yourself and decide but I think it's fantastic.

So sit back and enjoy a British crime thriller mystery drama I'm sure you will be hooked.

Streaming on ITV X now.

Get watching! It's definitely a 10/10 from most people I've spoken to.

Rubbish
karensaddington13 January 2024
Don't bother , unbelievable script , boring sidelines and terrible ending., the story had so many holes in it was unbelievable, boring and drawn out . I was looking forward to this as I usually like itv dramas and I thought the idea of a murder mixed in with a flood would be a good story line , but I struggled massively to watch it through till the end as was just so many storylines that had nothing to do with the actual story , the acting was very mediocre and yet another police shaming story , I've watched lots of these just lately and I know they are made up but it gives me no confidence in our policing system, if you've only seen episode one I'd leave it there.

Excellent. Very tense and well acted.
hbhihelen17 January 2024
Cant understand why it had such a poor review. Its about the best thing on tv at the moment. Well acted, full of tension and drama. Thoroughly enjoying it. Don't know how they managed to film the flood scene...must have been quite dangerous. Its not perhaps on the scald of some Hugh expensive dramas but it is great viewing and lm so l9okjng forward to the next episode. Well done to the actors in this and hope it gets better reviews soon. Congratulations to the writers. Happy Valley was great but this is also full of tension. I'm now rambling because l have to put in more text to post here now.

Unbelievably bad
karenchapman-8757216 January 2024
Don't want to add spoilers so just watch the first episode and you'll know what I mean. On the one hand she's supposed to be a really dedicated police officer and yet she's breaking the law left right and centre and not in an exciting "edge of your seat way" but just down right stupid way that will make you cringe badly. Bad acting, bad script and even worse props. Hats off to anyone who continues to the end of this series I would rather watch Crossroads it's got a more plausible storyline better actors and that's saying something because that was absolutely diabolical! That's it that's my review.

Disappointing
melaniecairns-0808713 January 2024
Within the first few minutes, as soon as I saw a Mini was in the flood I thought what a load of rubbish and sack the props buyers!!

To be fair, it was rubbish with or without the flooded Mini. This is a shame because we had had high hopes for a good addictive drama but it didn't grip us and it all just felt very 'fake' so the best option was to not continue watching it. We may come back to it at a later date, but will literally have nothing to do and won't be for quite a while.

There is so little good tv at the moment and this is just another one to add to the list, keeping people in jobs but without any backbone.

Episodes 5 & 6 will blow you away!
vjliberatori-5119211 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Just watched Episodes 5 & 6 and they blew me away. Sophie Rundle turns in a great performance in these last 2 episodes because everything was high stakes and she's so outstanding at intense drama. The scene with Matt Stokoe where he tells her he's a bent cop and that her father was too, exploded off the screen AND her scenes with the terrific actress playing Tasha were superb. But the final scene with the actor playing Lee immediately after the crash through the birthing sequence has me tearing up just writing about it. These last 2 episodes redeem this series! Doesn't seem like it was written for a 2nd season but I hope I'm wrong. I'd love to see all the characters battling against the corruption Jo uncovered.

High concept, disastrous writing and a flood of bad dialogues
Couchkik2016 January 2024
I thought After The Flood looked like a quality murder mystery with social undertones and interesting human portraits. For most of the first 2 episodes you can still believe it. The flashy flood scenes, the creepy murder scene fools you a while until you realize the characters are little plot devices reciting things to advance the story with basic personalities. Our lead detective is of course ahead of every detective, smarter, and makes ridiculous mistakes that she has to tell her mum every second of the show. She's your typical hard at work, good hearted woman, and pregnant too. And she becomes quickly insufferable making outrageous decisions, disrespecting everyone (future baby included) around her for her own agenda.

Soon you know that the less you know about a character the more he's hiding... By episode 5 it gets just dumb, with huge plot holes regarding how people show up when the plot needs to move on or how she ends up with every clue every time. Characters will constantly sneak on important moments, or secret talks like it's a superpower.

The dialogues don't help. We're talking mid day soap opera level of chat, with the plot getting more and more impossible and stupid. I think episode 6 is almost a comedy, the scenes between the detective and her husband reaching a all time low level of mediocrity in writing, acting, and suspense. Don't expect to be wowed by the big reveals as it gets so predictable and there will always be a character to explain why something happened. And when you understand who did what, it makes even less sense how the characters behaved with our detective.

The moment the show creates flashbacks for the people even though you've been explained the plot already, it's beyond bad like a mix of Scoobidoo and Midsummer Murders.

What a waste.

There is one major reason for scoring 8
rayw-8517210 February 2024
If there is any question about why it should be rated an 8 it's the leading actor/actress Sophie Rundle.

God, how can a heavily pregnant woman, in a police uniform to boot be so bloody gorgeous.

The story line isn't that bad, a combination of local tragedies due to flooding, distinct overtones of corruption and council indifference to the needs of the locals and climate change, and some sinister goings on in the background that have people killed.

But again I come to my main point, put the gorgeous Sophie in front of a camera dresses in a scarecrow and I need extra blood pressure tablets to get through the whole series.

Starts OK but becomes a convoluted mess by the end
frukuk17 January 2024
I read the reviews on here before watching this and so was surprised that the first episode was actually OK and by no means as dire as many reviewers had suggested.

Yes it had a "soapy" feel to it -- the "comedy" in-laws -- but Sophie Rundle was quite watchable as PC Joanna Marshall and the scenes of flooding seemed pretty realistic.

Unfortunately, as soon as PC Joanna Marshall decides she knows better than to follow standard police procedure, things start to go down hill. And by the end of the final episode, the story has become so convoluted that I'd stopped caring what happened.

So, if you want a believable story, please look elsewhere. I watched a couple of episodes of the new season of Silent Witness (s27ep03 and s27ep04 - Grievance Culture) and they were much more enjoyable than the 6 episodes of After the Flood.
