Nelson and Jones in two finals as Quy books his place

Jerry Quy became the last man to book his place at Sunday’s Group 5 Finals day after an impressive performance in the Waur Trophy semi-finals.

The competition is for unbadged players and the Aldersbrook left-hander came up against Kevin Reid of Woodford in the last four.

The match was nip and tuck to start with and the scores stood at 8-8, before Quy stepped up a gear.

He picked up a four and a three and that proved to be crucial as he booked his place in the final with a 21-10 win.

He will face Moosa Patel of Plashet Park in the final, which will be part of what promises to be an excellent day of competition at Old Dagenham Bowls Club this Sunday.

The blue riband event will be the champion of champion singles where we will see Pater Barham of South Woodford take on Ford Sports bowler Bill Nelson.

Barham collected the Walthamstow & District Champions crown last week, so he will be looking to complete a double, but Nelson will be strong opposition.

The Ford veteran reached the semi-finals of the county singles this summer, losing to eventual winner Steve Gunnell, so he will be looking for some silverware to show for his season.

The Geoff Hatfield Trophy will see Nelson in action once again. This time he takes on Wanstead Central’s Colin Jones, while Jones is also in action in the two-wood final where he plays his Central team-mate John Cook.

The final singles competition is the Veterans’ Cup which conjures up an interesting battle between David Ward of Ilford and Terry Hardie of host club Old Dagenham.

There is plenty of other action going on at Dagenham beginning with the Seeley Trophy final between South Woodford and Clementswood.

This is a double triples competition, which was won by Wanstead Central last year.

Central surprisingly appear in just one of the team finals, with the Beckett Trophy, a double fours competition seeing an intriguing tussle between hosts Old Dagenham and Wanstead.

Clementswood appear in their second final of the day when they take on Woodford in the Unbadged Double Fours, while the Cordell Cup will see last year’s runners-up Aldersbrook take on Wanstead Central in a repeat of last year’s final, won by the Nutter Lane team.

It should be an excellent day, with refreshments available and hopefully plenty of sunshine.
