“I started off when I was 12 and joined my first club in south east London.

“Over the years I got more involved and met more people.

“Now I am a member of three clubs.”

Meccano was founded by Frank Hornby, an English inventor, businessman and politician in 1908.

Although he had no formal training, Hornby began making toys for his sons in his workshop in 1899 and built models of cranes, bridges and trucks.

Hornby struck upon an idea that he if he made the parts interchangeable and separate, they could be bolted together and any model could be built from the same components.

The same methodology applied to structural pieces, such as axles and shafts, and this made the construction of complex mechanism systems, simple and is what 20th century engineering principles are based on.

Tim said: “A lot of members are from the older generation, we have a lot of engineers who started off using meccano.”

Visitors will also be introduced to the Meccanoid G15 KS, Meccano’s new 4-foot tall walking, talking robot that is control via mobile phone.

The event will again be held at the Hainault Baptist Church on December 5 between 10.30am and 5pm.

Tickets cost £4 for adults and children.
