Rams earn Class 5A bowling state title

JONESBORO -- Lakeside finished their season without a single loss as the Rams claimed the Class 5A boys state bowling title by 172 pins Wednesday at the Jonesboro Bowling Center.

The Rams finished with 4,005 total pins with Greenbrier finishing second with 3,833. Nettleton took third overall with 3,819 pins and defending state champion Benton was fourth with 3,819 pins.

"The boys finished the season without losing all year," said Lakeside coach Darrell Davis. "They led from the first game and never looked back. The boys were 253 pins up going into [the] Bakers [match] and ended up winning by 172 total pins."

Three Ram seniors earned All-State honors -- Tyson Keeney, Hunter Thomas Rhodes and Kade Arguello. Keeney finished fifth overall with a 604 series (234, 211, 167), Rhodes was ninth with a 589 series (204, 182, 203) and Arguello was 10th with a 584 series (168, 238, 178). Cael Broughton (541), Kade Tarbet (526) and Jimmy Tejcek (498) rounded out the team's scoring.

"Five of these six bowlers are seniors," Davis explained. "These five seniors have been conference champs three times, state runner-up once and two time state champions since their freshman year."

Bryan Massey, of Hot Springs, finished eighth overall and earned All-State honors with a 590 series (253, 178, 159).

The Lady Rams finished fourth while two earned All-State honors -- Lilly Crabtree and Jenna Sims.

Greenbrier cruised to the Class 5A girls state bowling title by 352 pins. The Lady Panthers knocked down 3,601 pins, Mountain Home was second with 3,249, Siloam Springs took third with 3,154, and Lakeside had 3,098.

Crabtree led Lakeside with games of 177, 131 and 168 for a 476 series, and Sims finished a pin behind her (148, 189, 138). Haley Fauber was six pins off of earning All-State honors with a 456 series (171, 135, 150). Abby Shelby (430), Kaithlyn Nguyen (396) and Paige Hines (391) rounded out the team's scoring.

Lake Hamilton's Ally Ross earned All-State honors with a fifth-place finish with a 517 series (179, 166, 172).

Arkansas Baptist (M) 85, National Park 77

LITTLE ROCK -- The Nighthawks (12-9) traded shots with the Buffaloes early, but Arkansas Baptist quickly shut down NPC's offense while holding NPC at bay in a late comeback attempt.

With the score knotted at 9-all with 14:20 left in the first half, Arkansas Baptist hit a 9-0 run to take a 18-9 lead by the 9:44 mark. Freshman Kamryn Vick put up 9 points to help chip away at the lead, but the Buffaloes pushed out to a 29-19 lead with 5:12 remaining with the team continuing to surge to take a 40-24 lead at the break.

Freshman Joe Ramey helped the Nighthawks turn things around in the second half with a 27-point effort, cutting into the deficit. With 28 seconds remaining, Ramey hit a shot from the free throw line to put NPC within 81-77, but the Buffaloes converted at the line to take the win.

Ramey led the Nighthawks with 31 points, and Vick added 16.

"Those young men are hurting and they wanted that one," head men's basketball coach Jason Hudnell said. "There were a lot of things against us in the second half and we battled our guts out. We never gave up and we never quit. They kept battling and that effort will win a lot of games for us. I'll take that team into March."

The Nighthawks host North Arkansas College today at 2 p.m.

Arkansas Baptist (W) 75, National Park 48

LITTLE ROCK -- Despite matching the Buffaloes shot-for-shot early, led by a 4-point effort from sophomore Grace Crawford, the Nighthawks (9-8) could not overcome a big fourth quarter performance from Arkansas Baptist.

With a 10-8 deficit with 3:40 left in the first quarter, Arkansas Baptist hit a 9-0 run to take a 17-10 lead into the second quarter. The Nighthawks gained some momentum in the second, cutting the deficit down to 19-17 on a 7-2 run. Freshman Imani Honey, of Mountain Pine, led NPC with 8 points in the period to lead the battle, but the Buffaloes rolled to take a 34-23 lead into intermission.

The Nighthawks hit 6 of 7 from the line in the third frame to pull within 34-32 with 7:35 remaining, but Arkansas Baptist hit another run to take a 54-38 lead into the fourth. Arkansas Baptist outscored NPC 21-10 in the fourth to secure the win.

Crawford led NPC with 15 points, and Honey added 12.

The Nighthawks host North Arkansas College today at noon.

Lake Hamilton (JB) 59, Texarkana 35

PEARCY -- The junior Wolves wrapped up the regular season Thursday night with a big non-conference win over the junior Razorbacks.

Lake Hamilton jumped out to an 18-5 lead in the first quarter slightly increasing its spread over Texarkana to 30-16 at halftime. The junior Wolves outscored Texarkana 29-14 in the second half to secure the win.

K.J. McDaniel led the junior Wolves with 20 points. Ty Robinson added 12 points, Zac Pennington had 11, Cooper Kindt put up 8, Easton Hurley had 4, Kai Condley finished with 3 and Kendrick Martin rounded out the scoring with 1.

The junior Wolves will travel to Conway next week for their conference tournament.

Bismarck (JG) 41, Fouke 32

ROSBORO -- Sarah Roberson and Tori Lingo combined for 26 points to lead the junior Lady Lions (20-4) past the junior Lady Panthers in the 3A-7 junior conference tournament Thursday night at Centerpoint.

Roberson and Lingo had 13 points each.

Bismarck will face Genoa Central in the championship game at 1 p.m.

El Dorado (VG) 64, Hot Springs 59

EL DORADO -- Jaylia Reed put up an impressive 46 points, but the Lady Trojans were unable to top the Lady Wildcats Tuesday night on the road.

Hot Springs (13-9, 7-3 5A South) took an early 15-9 lead, but El Dorado (9-15, 5-5) bounced back to outscore the Lady Trojans 15-7 to take a 24-22 lead into intermission. The Lady Wildcats continued to inch forward in the third for a 42-39 lead going into the final frame.
