The Meldrum House

It’s not everyday that one checks-in to a hotel by first ascending a 17th century staircase. The same can be said of enjoying a welcome dram of whisky in a 13th century bar. But at The Meldrum House near Aberdeen, that’s precisely what every day entails.

Meldrum House

Located on 240 acres of countryside, The Meldrum House has evolved through the centuries into one of the finest lodging options on a Scotland golf trip to Aberdeen. Its heritage can be traced to the year 1236, when the land was granted to the Barony of Meldrum during the reign of Scotland’s King Alexander II. In the centuries that followed, the baronial mansion took shape around the original tower, before a 1934 redesign yielded much of the house as we see it today.

The modern Meldrum House is a brilliant blend of old and new. The guestrooms located in the original Manor House are each classically appointed with a variety of treasures from the hotel’s almost 800 years of history. Adjacent the Manor House, the spacious guestrooms in The Stables feature a stylish decor that’s quintessentially Scottish. Thanks to a recent £5.4 million expansion, The Meldrum House is also home to a new wing with 28 contemporary guestrooms, each boasting stunning views of the golf course and countryside. In a way, the accommodations at The Meldrum House each represent a different era of the rich history that’s found here.

In addition to the exceptional accommodations, the Good Life at The Meldrum House is some of the best in this corner of Scotland. The two Rosette award-winning dining room offers a sophisticated menu of locally sourced dishes in an equally sophisticated setting. In a unique twist, The Meldrum House recently introduced Dome Dining, where guests can enjoy an exquisite private dining experience under the stars.

The highlight of any stay at the Meldrum House is a visit to the ancient Cave Bar. Portions of the bar date to its original 13th century structure, making it, without question, one of the oldest watering holes in Scotland. The recently expanded bar now features a bank of whiskey lockers, where a welcome dram awaits for members of the H&B Forces.

Of course, it’s the golf which has brought us here, and the Meldrum House makes a fabulous homebase for exploring the spectacular golf courses near Aberdeen. The links of Cruden Bay, Royal Aberdeen, and Trump International are all within a short drive of the property, as are other less heralded favorites such as Murcar Links and Stonehaven. In addition, those looking to explore the sights of the area even further will find Dunnottar Castle and the heart of Aberdeen to be a comfortable drive away.

There are few hotels in Scotland that blend Golf, the Good Life, and heritage together as well as the Meldrum House. But for all of its outstanding amenities and history, it’s the service found inside which recently earned it the title of Scotland’s Most Hospitable Hotel. With nearly eight centuries of hospitality under its belt, it’s safe to say that the Meldrum House has it mastered.
