The Old Greenwich Yacht Club Unmasked

Inside the Clubhouse at the Old Greenwich Yacht Club

As an avid Greenwich Point walker, I've zipped by the Old Greenwich Yacht Club, OGYC, a zillion times. I always wondered what the place was all about and what it looked like inside. Yesterday's Open House gave me the perfect opportunity to find out.

The OGYC building used to be a garage for the Tod family back in the day. Today it is one of four public boating clubs in Greenwich, and the only one with launch service. And SURPRISE You also don't have to own a boat to join. The OGYC has a 7-boat fleet to accommodate all the water activities the club offers to its members.

"It's a club for water enthusiasts of all kinds." said Kim Crocco, the Club's Past CommodoreIf it floats, OGYC's got it covered, from sailing to kayaking, racing, paddle boarding, fishing and cruising. They are affiliated with the Point's Greenwich Community Sailing, and team-up for events from Memorial day to Labor Day.

On April 26 OGYC is volunteering to help facilitate the Alumni Sprints Rowing Regatta. The Regatta was created by Dartmouth College rowing alum and offers rowing enthusiasts of all kinds, women, men, veteran masters and recent graduates a community rowing venue. OGYC will provide any and all kinds of support from parking and registration to providing boats in the water to mark the start and end points for the  rowers.

The OGYC is so quaint, charming and peaceful, I would join just to sit on the deck outside in the summer, or inside by the fire in the fall.
