Russian National Cup and Event Finals 2004

Svetlana Khorkina and Alexei Bondarenko won the all-around at the Russian Cup Finals, held Sunday in the Russian capital Moscow.
Bondarenko (56,500) was also the Russian National all-around champion this past spring. On second place came Nikolai Krukow, in front of Anton Golodsutskov
Khorkina showed a marked improvement Sunday (38.625), after making some mistakes the day before in the qualifiying round.
Monday and Tuesday take place the Russian Championships with the event finals...

World Cup in Belgium

The Belgian 'Gymnastiek Federatie Vlaanderen' pronounced, that a World Cup event of category A will be held in Ghent from November 5 to 7, in the city of the 2001 World Championships.
After La Serrena (Chile) in September it will be the second world cup after the Olympic Games, followed by the DTB Cup (Stuttgart, Germany) and the world cup final in Birmingham (GBR).

French National Team Championships 2004

French Team Nationals took place in Nantes last weekend. This competition awarded the best of French clubs.
The team from Marseille won the title of the first division with worlds vault finalist Coralie Chacon, french team member Magali Carosso, Mélanie Nunes, Marine Latour, Manon Guérin and Na?s Ciravolo (135.775 points). Toulon was second with Junior European floor finalist Julie Martinez and Betty Dupin (130.325).
This meet was also a test for the members of the national team, in which 1996 Worlds bars bronze medalist Isabelle Sévérino came back strongly with a total of 35.5.

Ramassamy injured... and she declared her Retirement Recent European member Nelly Ramassamy, which should have take part to this meet with Marseille, was not present in Nantes, as she has just tored her Achille tendon while training on the floor two weeks ago. She is definitly out of the Olympic Games and declared recently that she was giving up gymnastics after a long and a very successful career.

Marc Zanussi passed away!

With deep mourning, the Gymnastics Federation of Luxembourg has to inform that its President, Mr. Marc Zanussi passed away unexpectedly.

Only 45 years old, Marc ZANUSSI died of a surf accident on June 24, 2004.
Having extraordinary human qualities, Marc has directed our federation for the last four years with great competence and sensibility. His death will leave a great void within our federation.
We would like to express our sincerest condolences to his family and friends. His memory will survive him.

AAGJE VANWALLEGHEM & GÜNTHER COUCKHUYT most successfully
At the Belgian gymnastics championships in Gent favorites Aagje Vanwalleghem (35,275) and Günther Couckhuyt (50,600) won the allround titels, but also the most apparatus finals at Saturday.
Aagie Vanwalleghem won also the three event finals. Belgian Champion on beam is Caroline Debras.
Günther Couckhuyt got the titles on floor, rings and vault, Maartkin Demuynck on pommel horse and bars and Tom Jansen is the new Belgian champion on high bar...

Belgian All-around Championship 2004
Günther Couckhuyt (Winsol Gym Izegem), who placed allround 10th at the Europeans in Ljubljana won gold with 50.600 ptn.
At the junior competitions both favorites Koen Van Damme and Lynn Moonen were injured.
The young Gaëlle Mys (youngest participant at the Europeans in Amsterdam) showed quite some spirit and determination tonight and won gold with 33.037 ptn. Miranda Notermans won silver with 32.650 ptn, Sarah Iani (Gymnos Charleroi) won the bronze medal.
In the boys’ competition Hans Merckx proved flawless and won the Belgian title with 50.200 ptn. Donna-Donny Truyens won silver, Tom Jansen won the bronze medal.

The GymnastiekFederatie Vlaanderen / Royal Belgian Gymnastics Federation organises on Friday, May 28th the Belgian Championships Artistic Gymnastics in Gent.
Top of the bill are Aagje Vanwalleghem, allround 18th at the Europeans in Amsterdam and selected for the Olympic Games and Günther Couckhuyt, allround 10th at the Europeans in Ljubljana.
Other big names are Céline Sohet (25th allround at the Europeans) and juniors Lynn Moonen (allround 21st in Amsterdam), Koen Van Damme (allround 19th in Ljubljana) and Hans Merckx (allround 25th at the EC)....

Mikhail Voronin passed away!

At the age of only 59 years Olympic and former world champion Mikhail Voronin (RUS) passed away Saturday after a long period of illness.
Voronin was one of the most successful gymnasts in history.
His first all-around title he won at the 1966 World Championships, was the 8 times medallist at the 1966-1970 World Championships as well as at both the 1967 and 1969 European Championships....

At the 1968 Olympic Games, Mexico City (MEX) Voronin won two gold medals and all-around silver in the the Soviet Union team ...

Inside Gymnastics reported, that nine months after tearing her Achilles tendon during training for the World Championships team finals in Anaheim, Calif., Courtney Kupets (USA) scored a 38.175, including a meet-high 9.725 on bars for the former World Champ on that event - to top the all-around standings at last week’s International Friendship event at the U.S. National Team Training Camp in New Waverly Hills, Texas....

The international mixed pair Imogen Cairns (GBR) and David Vyoral (CZE) was the winner of the 2004 final round of 'SOKOL GRAND PRIX ' in Brno (Czech Republik) this weekend.
Guests from seven nation and all together 12 pairs took part at this international artistic gymnastics event in the Czech Republik.

Loes Linders switches to De Hazekamp

During the last weekend it was published that the Dutch all-around juniorr champion 2003, Loes Linders, has decided to switch to a different club. She will from now on train at the gymnastics center 'GTV de Hazenkamp' with the coaches Boris Orlov and Esther Heijnen.
Further information will be given during a press conference on Wednesday, May 19th 2004 in the training center of Nijmegen.
