A TON of fun was had as Rankin Park Bowling Club officially opened for its centenary year.

President Billy Hamill's grandson Aarron Humphreys delivered the first bowl of the season to get things under way for the milestone year.

The historic local club is planning to celebrate its 100th in style, with a centenary dance planned for July 9.

Billy says that everyone at the club worked hard to improve the grounds, greens and clubhouse before opening day.

The president, a long time member of the club, feels honoured to hold the office for such a historic year.

He said: "I started here when I was 10 and I've been a member for 37 years.

"I said about 15 years ago I wouldn't be the president again, but when the chance came up to do it in our 100th year I couldn't say no.

"It's a great milestone for the club and the community."

The club has planned a busy year of events to celebrate the anniversary.

Billy added: "For one day a month at least this season we're playing a friendly with another club, we're playing against almost everyone locally

"I think we have around 10 already organised

"A lot our older members weren't too keen on coming out during the pandemic so it'll be great to see everyone back.

"It was not as good playing competitions with a restricted group, you want to see as many names as possible up on the board

"Closing day and prizegiving are going to be huge this year, it'll be a great occasion for everyone.

"We've also been doing up the clubhouse and the surrounding area, we've had a great new seating area built

"Bowls has a big social side, it's so great to have that back and bring everyone back in."
