Will Crossley Team GB & Young Guns

Hi, I’m Will Crossley, I am 16 going on 17 and live in Whiteley near Fareham. For the last 5 years I have been playing roller hockey and ice hockey.

I have been going to monthly trials in Rotherham for the GB Roller Hockey team and Sheffield for the Young Guns Roller Hockey team. I have just received a letter offering me a place to represent Team GB in an international tournament in Corona, California this July and a letter offering me a place on the Young Guns Team playing in Detroit at the end of July. I also feel extremely honoured to have also been asked to represent the GB Mens Team for the Firs World Championships in China this September, though we have to review this due to college time and costs.

I was a late starter in hockey, but I can say it has been a great and really successful story so far. Five years ago I started playing ice hockey for Solent and Gosport and roller hockey for the Fareham Wildcats. As I became more experienced, I joined Guildford Junior Ice Hockey Team and Ash Avalanche Roller Hockey Team winning the U14s Southern League with Guildford and I represented England in Europe in the European Roller Hockey Club Championships with Ash.

Following 5 months out after knee surgery, I came back stronger than ever and I joined a roller puck league playing for Farnborough. That season, with Guildford we won the U14s Southern League and then we won the U14s Nationals in Sheffield and also won the A League tournament in Hull.  At Ash we came runners up in the Roller Hockey Youth Nationals and with Farnborough Arrows we won the Southern League and then the Nationals in Rotherham, so it was a really successful year, which I will always be very proud of.

For the next two years, I played ice hockey for Oxford Junior Stars U18s as their Captain, Roller Ball Hockey for Oxford Youth Hockey Team and the Farnborough Arrows U16s as well as the Southern Snipers Regional. I was Captain for GB Roller Puck team in California two years ago and last year I represented Team GB in Ball Roller Hockey in Croatia in the European Championships.

I go to Itchen in Southampton, studying A Levels, Biology, Environmental Science and Business Studies. You can probably tell that roller hockey and ice hockey take up most of my time outside college, but I also work part time as a lifeguard.

My college have given me permission for the time off to attend the AAU Junior Olympics and fortunately the State Wars are in the summer holidays.

I started in the hockey sports quite late really compared to my team mates, but I love the sports and I’m totally dedicated to them, but I still work hard at college of course. I play or train most days and I have to do a lot of travelling.

Roller Hockey is still not yet an Olympic Sport, though it is a Demonstration Sport, but that could and hopefully will change in the coming years. Sadly for now it means there is very little financial support available to us young athletes.

I am working part time as a qualified lifeguard and my Mum & Dad are helping pay towards everything, the flights, accommodation, food, transport, training fees, tournament entry fees, the training kit and all the playing kit but I would like to ask for your help please as it is so very expensive.

The cost for me is over £5000 and my parents still have to pay for their flights and accommodation. To help, I have a target to raise £2500, which would cover my airfares and contribute towards the fees and kit.

I really would appreciate it if you could be part of helping me achieve my dream of representing our country this year and I will be pleased with any help you can offer by sponsoring me.

I would like to invite you to come and watch us play at some of our local ice hockey and roller hockey games - why not come and watch some of the local games – you might like it, just like I did 5 years ago.

We are going to organise some fundraising events over the coming months where you could come and have a fun evening. Even if you can’t offer support for me at the moment, you can help by sharing my story with others who may be able to help.

Thank you

Will
