GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The Eden District bowling mixed pairs play-offs, semi-finals and finals were held over the weekend of 23 and 24 April. The semi-finals and finals were held on the Sunday at the Vista Bowling Club in Little Brak River.
The green was in excellent condition and saw some really exciting bowls, watched by many supporters from various clubs in the Eden District. The initial stages saw 96 teams entering the tournament. This bodes well for the game of bowls in the district.
Both semi-finals were tough affairs with the team of Billy Radloff and Susan Meyer winning against the team of Bennie van Loggerenberg and Gail Steyn. Both these teams are from the George Bowling Club.
The other semi-final was between the George team of Mike McCarthy and Johlene Bronkhorst up against the team from Knysna Bowling Club, Ted Coetzee and Arlene Bosse. The winners of this game were Mike and Johlene.
The finals were thus between Billy and Susan up against Mike and Johlene. Billy and Susan got off to a good start taking the early lead of seven shots to three. Mike and Johlene then caught up and went into a 23-11 lead. This was too much for Billy and Susan to come back, and Mike and Johlene took the win with a final score of 25-11.
Unfortunately the play-off for the bronze medal did not take place, due to Ted not feeling well and thus the bronze was taken by the team of Bennie and Gail.
This was a great effort from George Bowling Club and possibly a first, that one club takes the gold, silver and bronze in the same tournament.
