What will you do with the Wish Sport money?

We would utilise any additional funding given to the club to provide our members with some additional dedicated coaching, which would also help support our new and less experienced members. It would also go a long way to providing court hire costs, which are of a premium, as well as purchasing club branded shirts or track suits.

How long has your group been running?

Ormesby Badminton Club was established in 1939 as one of the founding clubs in the Teesside area.

How many members does your group have?

The club is one of the stronger clubs in the local league having approximately 35 members, three coaches and seven committee members. The club has members playing from lower league standard to senior and master county players. It has a number of teams in the local Teesside League and a Yorkshire League team with a connection to Durham and Yorkshire county. We always welcome new members, both social players and those looking to play competitive badminton.

Who is your group’s most successful player?

We have a few including Stephanie and Andrea Barwick, Matt Train and Rebecca Boyle, who all represent Yorkshire County. Andy McCullough represents Durham County, and Kay Swales, Greg Canning and Andy Barwick represent Durham Masters. Finally, Andy Barwick represented England in the European Competition in Portugal, September 2014.

Why is your sporting hero, and why?

Gao Ling because she was always happy on court whether winning or losing.

Why should someone join your group?

Badminton is a sport that can be played by anyone of any age and any ability. You can compete at both low and high standards, such as league and county, right up to country level. There is also a great social circle for people to join in.
