Quendon and Rickling Green #FocusFriday

Updated: Oct 27, 2023

Rickling Green and Quendon are conjoined villages between Saffron Waldon and Bishop's Stortford. London Stansted Airport is approx 20min drive away and it is just 5min to Newport train station, from where it is roughly 20mins to Cambridge and 1 hour to London. (There is a map at the bottom of this page along with liks to local services.)

Historically, for trade purposes people and their homes gravitated to the main road going through Quendon heading south to Bishop's Stortford, and north to Saffron Waldon. You can now see a mixture of listed buildings - some dating back to 17th Century - and more modern homes. One of the most striking buildings in the area is the St Simon and St Jude Church. Some of the stone dressings date back to the 13th Century, although most of the church was rebuilt in 1861.

There are two large open areas for football pitches and the cricket pitch (home to Rickling Ramblers) that are the hub of the two villages; with the Quendon bowling club on the opposite side of the main road. Tucked away nearby is the Rickling Church of England Primary School.

Overlooking the cricket pitch and pavilion is the local pub the Cricketers Arms. This award winning pub has an outstanding menu (awarded an AA rosette) and has three private dining areas you can book, as well as 10 individually designed bedrooms. Inside the bar area you can relax beneath the oak beams and pursue the wine list or cocktail menu and check out what events they have coming soon.

Just a short walk from the pub, you can find Bluebell Woods. Although the reason for its name might not be in abundance most of the year, there is plenty to enjoy in any season. Several paths wind through the woodland and you can be rewarded with some great views across the countryside. If you want to make the most of your walk to take in the sights, there are several local guides to routes you can take such as this one.
