MUCH-loved Hindhead resident Audrey Mattock has died, aged 95.

After training as a nurse at London’s Great Ormond Street during the Second World War, Audrey moved to Hindhead in 1949 as assistant matron and then matron of the Church of England Children’s Society adoption home, Twizzletwig.

In 1960, she married Jim Mattock, a fanatical cricketer and headmaster of Marchant’s Hill Rural Centre (now PGL). Jim had three sons, Terry, David and Richard, and the couple went on to have two more sons, Chris and Clive.

She was a devoted parishioner and longtime flower arranger at St Alban’s Church, secretary of Hindhead Playing Field Association, an active member of Haslemere Carers Support Group, The Alzheimer’s Disease Society, Hindhead Luncheon Club and Mothers’ Union, and the author of Beacon Hill – Journey into the 21st Century.

When Jim died in 1990, she became president of Hindhead Cricket Club.

Audrey’s funeral is at St Alban’s Church on Friday, June 7, at 2pm. Donations to Great Ormond Street/The Children’s Society online at gmluff.uk/donations.
