A community has been thanked for supporting its town’s annual pumpkin fair for another year.

Soham Pumpkin Fair, which has been running since 1975, returned on Saturday (September 30).

The fair promotes as many clubs and organisations in the town and surrounding areas as possible, as well as encouraging people to explore what is available locally for them to meet new friends and develop new interests and hobbies.

Secretary for the pumpkin fair, Jenny Fletcher, said: “The fair was officially opened by our mayor, David Woricker and this was followed by arena displays by local groups. Ferret racing returned this year too, which is always very popular with the crowds!

“We were also delighted to have David Palmer back again this year, running our grand auction which raised over £200.

“Other attractions included our local fire engine, vintage vehicles, bygones, a funfair, a pumpkin stall, a hog roast, and various refreshment stands.”

This year’s beneficiaries were Soham Roller Hockey Club, Soham Brigade, 1st Soham Brownies and 4th Soham Brownies with a theme of ‘let’s join a club’ to link in with the beneficiaries.

Jenny added: “Our prize giving ceremony rounded off the afternoon: heaviest pumpkin in show was grown by Andrew Fletcher weighing in at 152kg, heaviest pumpkin grown by a Soham child was by Frederick Murfitt at 72.5kg and the tallest sunflower was grown by Keegan Casey at 4.1m. All other results can be found on our website: www.sohampumpkinfair.co.uk."

Chair of Soham Pumpkin Fair, Michelle Harrison, said; “I would like to thank everyone that took part in the fair, all the amazing volunteers, performers, stall and pitch holders, but most importantly the community of Soham for coming out today and supporting us.

“The 11 months of planning is all worth it to be able to raise money for great clubs in Soham."
