Erbil Citadel is an ecological accumulations flat area of (110) thousand m2 and it is located in the middle of the city of Erbil. Reaches a height of (415 m) higher than the sea level and (26 – 30m) higher than the level of the city. Erbil Citadel is regarded as one of the oldest historical castles which passed historical stages such as the Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian and Assyrian.

In other stages, this region suffered multiple attacks. The citadel became under threats from various authorities such as (Greyhound Achaemenid and Sassanian) then became under the rule of the Islamic Army, making archeologists call it more lively relics in the world, where life is still going on so far. It was one of the difficult castles even the repeated attacks of Mongolians in the year 1228 AD led by Ariqaonyan couldn’t occupy it. The Castle consists of three quarters (Sara, Takya and Topkhana (Cannon)).

There is also a big mosque inside the castle built on the ruins of a destroyed church with an Old bathroom that its history is not clear to the archaeologists despite the fact that some of them say that its history goes back to the year 1775. the castle includes 506 houses, (5) of which are based on engineering technician orderly and decorated and ornamented in various forms. Like the house of (Hashim Dabbagh Chalabi, Mulla Salem Chalabi, Ahmed Chalabi, Sheikh Jamil Ahmed affendi and Mofaq Haji Rashid Agha). at the present time and under the supervision of the High Commissioner for the reconstruction , the castle is being reconstructed on its old form of houses and walkways.
