Portsmouth High gymnasts lose to rival Mt. Hope

MIDDLETOWN — The Portsmouth High School gymnastics team lost to Mt. Hope in a Division II meet at the Newport YMCA Tuesday night.

Three points divided the two teams as the previously undefeated Patriots scored 129.5 to Mt. Hope’s 132.3.

Junior Kristie Lee led the Patriots with an all-around score of 34.2, including a 8.4 on vault, 7.9 on bars, 8.95 on beam and 8.95 on floor.

Freshman Madeline Harkin posted an all-around score of 32.6 with an 8.65 on vault, 8.15 on bars, 8.0 on beam and 7.8 on floor. Junior Mackenzie Brow had an all-around score of 32.55 with an 8.1 on vault, 7.9 on bars, 8.5 on beam and 8.05 on floor. Sophomore Ellie Platt had an all-around score of 7.9 on vault, 7.05 on bars, 7.25 on beam and 7.65 on floor.

Senior Caroline Platt had an-all around score of 28.15 with an 8.2 on vault, 6.7 on bars, 6,05 on beam and 7.2 on floor.

Senior Molly Wynegar scored a 7.75 on vault, 5.9 on bars and a 6.6 on beam. Junior Kristen Takacs scored a 6.1 on beam. Jaclyn DeLuca scored a 6.95 on floor and Kerry Lehane scored a 7.4 on vault.

Next up for the Patriots: They travel to Warwick to face Toll Gate at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 18, at Dream Big Gymnastics.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
