It's not often a sport is renamed, but that's just what happened with Synchronized Swimming.

The Weyburn Synchro Stars Swimming Club has a new name.

“Internationally, Synchronized Swimming has been renamed Artistic Swimming,” explained president Shelley Dammann. “Canada and Saskatchewan have recently rebranded, and now we're proud to be one of the first clubs in Canada to rebrand as well. So, going forward, our new club name is now Weyburn Artistic Swimming Club.”

The name of the sport at the FINA Congress in 2017, at the suggestion of the International Olympic Committee to better align with other artistic sports.

Dammann said the change has been easier for the young swimmers than it has been for the coaches.

“The coaches are having a lot of trouble switching from Synchro to Artistic Swim, it's just an old habits die hard,” she said. “But we're rebranding our logo also, so we're pretty excited about some new team colours and some new clothing and just a new look for our club.”

In fact, Weyburn's swim club is one of the first in the province to follow suit on the international rebranding.

Dammann said most of the rebranding for the Weyburn Artistic Swimming Club will be done online.

“We usually end up with having to order new clothing every year, because the girls are all growing so fast, and we have minimal cost with the rebranding, as far as the club's concerned,” she said. “Just changing the web site, changing the email, and everything will roll over eventually, it just takes a little time.”

She added the swimmers are excited about a whole new look for their team. A new logo is currently being finalized.

The WASC will be hosting a Try Artistic Swimming Camp next week, from August 6 to 9th, for anyone age five and up who can handle putting their face in the water and wants to see if the sport is right for them.
