A Fine First Season for Deer Park’s Unified Bowling Team

A Fine First Season for Deer Park’s Unified Bowling Team thumbnail245127

Deer Park High School’s Unified Bowling team recently completed a fine first season, guided by head coach Brian Tower and assistant coach John King. Through six marvelous matches during March, both home games at Strike 10 Lanes in Deer Park, and away contests at Larkfield Lanes and East Islip Lanes, the participating students developed their athletic and social skills.

Sponsored by the Special Olympics, the Unified Bowling sports program combines unified athletes with intellectual disabilities and unified partners without intellectual disabilities to form competitive teams at the high school level. In Unified Sports, students with disabilities are given the chance to interact with their peers who do not have a disability in a “typical” school experience, creating new friendships and building confidence and important social skills.
