The oldest indoor bowling club in the world - that’s Ayr Indoor.

They celebrated their 80th birthday last Friday, exactly 80 years to the day that it was opened on October 30, 1935.

Scotland’s first indoor bowling stadium was opened by a Belgian gentleman called Edouard Ecrepont who arrived in Britain around 1917 to recover from injuries received in the First World War.

And he was to stay to fulfil a burning ambition to create his own indoor bowling arena.

The stadium was later handed down two generations before being sold in 2001 to current owner Gordon Neil.

Crystal Palace was opened in the early 1900s but has since been re-sited.

So Ayr Indoor is the oldest club on its original location.

Meanwhile, Ayr enjoyed three wins in Saturday’s National League fixtures.

The senior gents beat Galleon 75-42 while the ladies beat Prestwick 84-72.

These results see both sides remaining in contention in their sections.

The gents won 87-72 away to unbeaten leaders Falkirk. Scores: J Seaton 27, J McHutchison 15; C Smith 27, G Flynn 15; S Wyllie 16, S Allan 19; J Cuthbertson 17, S Glen 23.

The gents now entertain Aberdeen, the ladies visit East Kilbride while the senior gents travel to Inverclyde.

In the National championships, Ayr’s senior gents rink of Joe Reid, Bob Henderson, John Docherty and Douglas McKie lost 18-3 to Galleon in the prelim round.

On Sunday, Sandy Wyllie faces Ardrossan’s Jim Walker in the second round of the senior singles at Ardrossan.

The senior pairs and senior triples also have second round ties at Ardrossan against Blantyre and Auchinleck.
