STEPHEN FREW and Anne Brown are Ayr’s champion bowlers.

Frew, of Crooksmoss, won the gents title for the first time when he beat Jamie McRoberts (Hawkhill) 21-8 in the Forehill final on Sunday.

And Anne, of Newton Park, won the ladies title for the fifth time in its 14-year history when she beat Joyce Arnott (Northfield) 21-11.

Derek Lang became the first Hawkhill winner since 1986 of the McDonald Agnew Trophy.

He followed in the shoes of Tommy Collins, beating Stuart Yates (Crooksmoss) 21-18.

Carrie McLean ( Cumnock) and Dawn Anderson (Kincaidston & Beltmont) travel to Newcastle on Sunday to represent Scottish Young Bowlers Association in an international event.

Carrie won the girls’ championship at Ayr Bowls Tournament, while Dawn retained her ladies U25 Ayrshire singles title.

Auchinleck Indoor gents senior leagues started on Monday. Ladies fours, senior fours and pairs get underway on Tuesday, September 10. Evening leagues begin on Monday.

PRESTWICK Ambassador Indoor is now open after major refurbishments during the summer.

The leagues get underway on Monday, with the Wednesday senior points leagues starting on September 18. The club’s talented junior section resume on Sunday, September 22, at 10am. Coaching for beginners starts on Monday, September 23 at 9am.

The introduce-a-friend scheme is carrying on this season, with any current member who introduces a new member to the club receiving a £30 discount from their yearly subscriptions.

The club’s restaurant offers a variety of meals everyday, available to the general public, not just members. Queries to 01292 471454.

AYR Indoor is now open with limited hours, with normal hours in operation from Monday.

Some leagues also start next week, notably the gents 6.30 league. Entries are still being accepted for the 8.30 league.

Ronnie Lang is gents president following the AGM. Vice-president: David Irving, secretary: Stuart England, treasurer: George Hodge. The meeting decided that the committee should select a team manager and/or selectors.
