Try Bowls was launched during the Games to capitalise on the event’s interest and get more people of all ages playing bowls at clubs.
Over one hundred clubs took part in Try Bowls last summer, many reporting growing interest in the game and more members as a result.
Now, for the campaign’s second lap, the numbers are higher - 188 clubs have committed to the campaign by offering a variety of incentives to encourage more people to play Scotland’s most successful Commonwealth Games sport.
Through the campaign clubs are organising open days, coaching sessions and communityevents allowing newcomers to try the game for free.
Bowls Scotland is leading Try Bowls by helping clubs spread the word in their communities, providing marketing support for clubs, and has created a website to help people easily locate their local participating club.
Bowls Scotland is also supporting the STV Appeal by encouraging clubs offering Try Bowls to take part in a Trick Shot Challenge. Glasgow 2014 double Gold medallist, Paul Foster MBE, is throwing his weight behind Try Bowls and the Trick Shot Challenge to get more people playing the game and improving their skills.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for people to come along and Try Bowls through Bowls Scotland,” said Foster. “There are 188 bowling clubs taking part in the Try Bowls campaign which gives people right the way across Scotland the chance to play this wonderful sport.
“The Trick Shot Challenge was great and it’s another opportunity for people to show their skills and for people to come along and raise funds for the STV Appeal.”
Bowls Scotland Development Manager, Colin Hutchison is delighted that so many clubs have signed up for this year’s try Bowls Campaign.
“There is little doubt that the Glasgow 2014 Games pushed bowls into the public’s imagination like never before and encouraged people of all ages to try the sport,” said Hutchison.
“We were pleased that so many clubs seized the opportunity through Try Bowls last summer. But we are even more delighted that 188 clubs have signed up for this summer’s campaign.
“These numbers show a determination amongst our clubs to attract people of all ages, which I’m sure will be reflected in the numbers of people taking up the game.”
