East Kilbride Handball Club kids were celebrating last Sunday after two of their teams claimed trophies in the Scottish Youth Cup finals.

Three sides made it to finals at the capital’s Oriam National Sports Centre, with the 2008/09 team and the 2002/03 age group crowned champions.

Their 2006/07 boy’s squad also reached the final, but they lost to Kelvinside. There was also close calls for EK’s 2004/05 boy’s team, who lost in the semi finals to Troon, and the 2006/07 girl’s side, beaten by Kelvinside in the last four.

Glory arrived first for the 2008/09 side. They won all their matches in a round robin tournament against Kelvinside (5-3), Troon (11-4), West Lothian (8-4) and Tryst 77 (7-1) to take home the trophy.

Top scorers on the day were Aimee Jeffrey, Caleb Welch and Euan Jackson, with a special mention for goalkeeper Fern Sampson who was outstanding in all her matches.

The last final of the day saw the 2002/03 team take on West Lothian, who were looking to win the cup for the third year in a row.

However, there was top performances from EK goalkeeper Lewis McGuinness, Diarmid McCreadie and Kenzie Clark in a fast and exciting game that EK won 32-25.

Ryan Kealy and Aonghas Slevin top scored with Joe Jackson and Hayden Legowski solid in defence. EK coach Michael Lavery said: “I am very proud of all the players.

“The hard work at training throughout the year really paid off.

“Credit to the other sides as well, they never gave up and competed well right up to the final whistle.

“The club were delighted to have three representatives in the finals this year.”
