Yoga and the natural world

Humans have an innate connection with nature. We are a part of the natural world and our bodies are intimately connected to the environment around us. Our chaotic moderns lives can create a feeling of disconnected from the natural world (especially when living in London!) but our yoga practice can offer tools for reestablishing our relationship with nature and feeling grounded in our daily lives.

“We are all as much extraordinary phenomena of nature as trees, clouds, the patterns in running water, the flickering of fire, the arrangement of the stars and the form of a galaxy.”

- Alan Watts

The emotional and energetic side of our yoga practice is contained within the chakra system. The root chakra, the muladhara chakra, located at the base of the spine represents our foundation, our connection to the earth, and our sense of safety and security in the world.

When the muladhara chakra is blocked or imbalanced, we may feel anxious, ungrounded, or disconnected from the world. However, practicing yoga poses that focus on grounding and connecting to the earth can help balance and open the muladhara chakra. Such poses include Balasana (Child’s Pose) and Vrikshasana (Tree Pose) which help to root down into the earth and connect with its grounding energy.

Another way to connect with the earth is through restorative yoga. Restorative yoga is a gentle form of yoga that involves holding poses for longer periods, allowing for deeper relaxation and release. Restorative poses that focus on grounding include Supta Baddha Konasana (Reclining Bound Angle Pose) and Savasana (Corpse Pose). By using props to support the body and focusing on the breath, you can release tension and connect with the earth's energy.

Incorporating yoga poses that open the muladhara chakra and weaving restorative yoga into your practice can help you feel more grounded and connected to the earth. By taking the time to slow down and connect with your body and the natural world around you, you can cultivate a deeper sense of peace, stability, and grounding in your daily life.
